RIP Ernest Borgnine
What a fantastic actor. Aged 95, I thought he was going to live forever.

So sad.......he was a very nice fellow.....he actually bummed some change off me many years ago in Beverly Hills to feed a parking meter......we knew each other from my helping out my family, who were in the jewelry business (he was a customer), and so he felt comfortable asking......
I, too, was of the mindset that he would live forever.......... G-d rest his soul.........

Borgnine served in the Navy and was discharged just months before Pearl Harbor. After Pearl Harbor, he re-enlisted and served during WWII for a total of ten years on the Navy.
After getting out of the Navy the second time, he attended acting school because he didn't want to become a pasty factory worker. The WWII veterans have been dying off pretty fast for the last 30 years and there won't be any left before long. One thing about that generation that I find interesting is how many of our greatest actors and how very many lesser known character actors got their training on the GI Bill following WWII. Just an interesting side note to a remarkable man, a remarkable career, and a remarkable life.

I can't think of a single role where I didn't enjoy his acting. Seemed like a nice guy every time I saw him in an interview too.

As a little kid McHales Navy was one of my favorite shows. Ernest, Tim Conway and Capt Palmeter? had this kid in stitches.
The PT boats were amazing machines in their time. Made in good part of plywood and monsterous engines they terrorized the Japanese fleet. The show was my introduction to the Navy and my first on my list of reasons to join the USN later on. For all he did on the screen to entertain us and his service to the Country, I salute you. RIP Cmdr. McHale. |

Don't forget Marty and From Here to Eternity.
With his physique who would have thought he'd out live Frank and Burt?

When I was a kid I saw Bad Day At Black Rock , a good film . In one scene E.B.
picked a fight with Spencer Tracy , who played a one-armed W.W.2 vetern . Tracy beat him up using Ju-Jitsu , it was the first time I had seen martial arts in a movie , I was smitten , enrolled in every martial arts school I could find and , within a year , I became a 45th Dan of Everything ! I had to register my hands as lethal weapons .... what ! you don't believe me ? Quite right , I joined the local Judo club , got thrown around by psychopaths all evening and decided that flower-arranging was safer. Ernst was a great Badguy.....
