Maybe I'm just leary but I see tons of Rolex watches with "aftermarket" dials. After having two watches stolen from me, I have a theory. Do you think people put the after market dials on rolex watches to change the way a stolen watch looks? What Im saying is, look at ebay. TONS of watches on there with aftermarket dials. I had a unique watch stolen from me that I look at ebay for every couple days for. But if they took my stolen watch, changed the dial, without S/N in a ad, i'd never know it was mine looking at it. Just wondering if Im on to something? I'd never want a Rolex with a fake dial!

I think your theory there might be a possibility.

If you just look at Ebay, you can find a vintage SS DJ for example starting at $1 for bid and selling at about a thousand or so. You can find that similar DJ at a more reputable site online selling for maybe almost 2000 or so. I think what prompts the bidding on these watches to start so slow is that the watches have been costumized with aftermarket parts. This affects the integrity of the watch and also its resale as well. I would never buy an aftermarket watch on Ebay. Its just not worth it I think because you wont be able to have the watch serviced by the RSC or when they do, theyll replace everything back to original parts and charge you a premium for it. Thats why Ebay to me is like a big gray cloud of uncertainty.

Might be true, but the SERIAL NUMBER would still be unique.

But nobody would ever post the S/N in the ad on line. I'd say 7 out of 10 on ebay have after market dials, bezels, and such. But if you were in on a scam, you can take a watch, change the dial, bezel, and whatnot, and with out the s/n it would be impossible to tell it was your stolen watch. Maybe at some point it will go in for service, and Rolex will see the S/N is on the stolen list. i've never seen any serious Rolex wearer want a major part of their watch being fake. I see sometimes a band change if you dive or something. But never a entire dial.
I see dials on ebay they say are aftermarket, but they say rolex on the dial!!!

I guess one could always ask to know what the serial # of the watch is (giving the reason you want to check if is stolen). The seller might not want to give that information, but then I would back off the deal. Anyway, I never buy estate Rolex watches, but from an AD only
