Collectors: What kind of watch collector are you?

Do you have a strategy, or personal rules you follow? I have seen various YouTube videos where people discuss why and how they assembled the collection they have - those are interesting. In many cases there seems to be a common phenomenon: it starts with somewhat random gathering, but gradually evolves into a more targeted strategy or niche. But everyone has a different strategy or niche.

What's yours?

The way i choose what watch i want. By catogorizing watches I'm lacking in complication, size, fit, and brand.

For example i believe my current collection is starting to hit what I'm talking about. Im all about diversifying my collection. I usually like to stick to the main companies rolex, AP, PP, Cartier, Hublot (which i personally don't like anymore), Panerai. Would consider a VC, Lange, Arnold and Son for a dress watch.

Next i look at the complication. Theres nothing wrong with have 10 chronograph watches. But personally i probably wouldn't buy two chrono watches in succession. When looking at the complication i categorize them as land, sea, air and sub divide them into fit and how i would use them.

So far i believe my collection has one for each category with my DD being non of those complications as my dress watch.

Watches must do more than just tell time, with features I will actually use daily.

I started with Rolex, and over many years I've had Panerai, Cartier, and a couple of APs...Rolex is (at this time) the only watch for me.

Both out of usefulness to me, and personal taste (I didn't love my briefly held Daytona, and there have been others) I came to adore the GMT complication.

Vintage midsize watches are sorta my thing. 4 digit SN plexi, I'm trying to get a collection of midsize Rolexes with as many vintage variants as possible. Its tough to stick yourself to it because its really an endless hole you can get into. Right now I have a 1500 OP Date SS, a 6426 SS, a 14kt 6567 that will be in next week. And numerous other lesser watches. I've had a few other high end watches, and I've always enjoyed having an Omega in the collection. I had a yellow dial speedmaster, a vintage seamaster, and I sold them both but I'll be paying off my omega I put on layaway next month so I'll have my first really modern watch. Its from 2011 I believe, doesn't appear to have ever been worn and its the Ernie els LTD edition so I figure it will retain its value fairly well.

I like the older models. 50's, 60's even 70's. Doesn't have to be upper end, either. Truth be told, I like the style of some of the middle brand watches just as much.

Collector turned dealer, but when it comes to collecting I collect what I like to wear. For a long time I was consumed with collecting all of the 'desirable' sport models, but finally figured out that those weren't what I necessarily enjoyed wearing.

For me I just ended up buying the watches that appealed to me at different stages of life and keeping them. In the past some were sold but replaced with the same (or a similar) model. I like buying watches that could be a daily wear piece for life, capable of handing adventures in water. Going through my safe is like a timeline of memories for me, it's great.

I don't have a strategy. If I like it, I can afford it and know that I'll wear it then I'll buy it

I buy watches I like.

In terms of price, four figures is my current limit and probably will remain so.

My other interests are beginning to broaden, so my discretionary income is getting stretched a little more, so there may not be another watch this year.

I think the only thing that makes me a collector in the eyes of others is that I try to learn as much as I can about watches in general.

In my own mind, I'm not really a collector.

I just own a bunch of watches.

I go with my gut. That means I think about "will I wear this over my ____?" The answer is usually "no," so I still haven't bought anything after my Daytona. The only things that I've considered have been AP - since it's "next level" and super-interesting to me. The issues I have there are size, so I've considered their smaller offerings, which overlap with my current watch. I wouldn't wear a Royal Oak 15450 over my Daytona most days, so having that just sit around isn't a wise choice.

If I were to buy a second everyday-type watch, it'll be gold. That way, I'll have a watch on leather, a SS sport watch, and a YG watch for all other occasions. I don't have the money to buy everything I want, but I do have enough to get what I REALLY want.

strategy is simple. If you can afford what you like - buy it. If your wife likes it was well you are the double winner!

Aim, shoot, enjoy.

Obviously I don't try to lose money, but I won't just buy a watch that I don't like for the goal of appreciation.

I buy what I like to look at and feel.

I don't consider myself a collector so no strategy.

It is more of a childhood dream come true to own a Rolex.

Currently have 2 but will probably stop at 3 or 4.

I have to juggle keeping my wife on side and that's not easy.... she got the first one and even the second one. Now.... i'm struggling.

I buy what I like they don't have to be expensive. In fact some of my favorate watches cost no more than a coffee from a posh cafe.
This could account for the number of watches I currently own

I buy what I want.

However, what i want seems to be heavily influenced by the Rolex ads I saw in National Geographic in the 70s as a kid...
