Comic book collectors?

Anyone? I was going through my storage this week while moving stuff from my single days into a larger unit and found my comic book collection. It definitely brought back some great memories of trying to hunt down some silver and bronze age books in the pre-ebay days.

I am a novice collector at best with just a handful of key issues and moved on to other hobbies. Maybe I’ll get back into it someday 🤣

Anyone care to share any comic collection or memories related to the hobby? Thanks as always for sharing all.

I truly love this place.

I had a customer who had some issue of hulk that was graded a restored 9.5, apparently if it was original it would be worth half a mil, still worth 20-30k in the condition its in. His ebay auctioncended at 15000 without the reserve met so I have a feeling it is worth the 20-30 he told me. He says silver age comics are the best area of investment right now though

I was big into GI Joe as a kid, so a few years back I filled in most of the collection from start to finish with all the offshoots at that time.

“And knowing is half the battle.” I used to watch the cartoons when younger. Spider-man and marvel were my go to comics. Superman as well. I know I have more stuff somewhere in my storage, just need to look.

Collected in the mid 80s. First comic was Dr Strange. Still have a couple boxes of what i thought was a pretty good collection (mainly Marvel). I have that #129 also. Then got back into CGC graded comics via online auctions a few years ago...wish I kept it up. I'll post more pics from my loose collection later.20180512_022709.jpeg20180512_022818.jpeg20180512_022744.jpeg

Amazing examples, I wish I had known to preserve comics when I was a Kid back in the 1970s. I had that issue of HULK and the one before it (first appearance of Wolverine), also IRON FIST #14 (first appearance of Sabertooth) among others.

But I bought comics to read, and I literally read them until they fell apart.

I use to collect comics... use to love those conventions too. I remember collecting hulk, Spider-Man, X-men etc mostly Marvell until dark horse came out. Also loved mCfarlane with spawn etc. those were good days.

Fondest memories was when my TIGER MOM was forcing me to study, I would put a comic book in between books. And when she came in quickly tilted the book To let the comic slide to the floor.

Holy high grades Batman

Congrats on some amazing stuff. I would love to see more! I don’t have very many graded books, just tried to collect what I could afford and keep in semi decent condition at the time. I remember buying that 129 issue when they announced a new Punisher movie in hopes it would go up in value as ASM 1 did when they first released Spider-man with Toby Maguire but it didn’t pan out as I had hoped.

It has still gone way up from what I’ve seen as sold on the bay. Probably triple wjat I paid for it at the time.

Do you ever wish you had reader copies? Grades to collect and a reader to enjoy?

Wouldn't say I was a serious collector but used to read 2 UK comics called warlord & bullet. As a young boy I used to go the new agents every sat morning. My dad would give me a £1 note - that covered his daily express, my comic & a dozen soft white rolls. Then we’d have our breakfast together in silence while our heads were in our respective papers. Always think about that when I pull these out

That's awesome! Few know that IH#180 is the first appearance of Wolverine (last panel), but #181 is the one everyone wants (first full issue).

I have a bunch of loose comics, but thought about getting repro coffee table books. I do plan to hang a few in special uv protected glass/frames.

Here are some I took this morning. Main collecting was Xmen...have a run from issue #200-260.

I still plan to buy a graded Amazing Fantasy #15, or Hulk #1....or Rolex 6263, whichever comes first. 20180512_110358.jpeg20180512_110640.jpeg20180512_110951.jpeg20180512_111124.jpeg

Chris, Amazing stuff. Thank you for sharing with us. When my collection grows up it wants to be just like yours.

Have you considered selling some off to get a higher grade ASM1 or Amazing Fantasy?

Do you happen to know where I can get some of those replica books with the stories? It would be great to have those to read and leave the valuable stuff stored.

Thanks Hiram! Honestly, pretty modest when I collected in my teens, wish I got back into buying graded comics earlier...it only dawned on me about 5 years ago.

I never thought of consolidating the loose comics...probably not enough value for a mid grade AF15...Im just going to bite the bullet one day.

Regarding reproduction, Ive seen bounded books in the past but haven't looked in a while, if I find some, I'll PM you.

Chris

This is a cool story, thanks for sharing...there are specific frames with UV acrylic to display comic books (check Amazon or ebay), those would look good over an office desk!

Chris... incredible collection.

That Claremont/Miller Wolverine 4 issue run is some of the best stuff I’ve ever read.

I wouldn’t say I’m a collector, but I’ve been amassing a library of Omnibuses and trades lately, partly for my own curiously and partly for my kids one day.

Cool thread

I loved comics back in the day (90's)

I had a few of the ones you've pictured here... I has AMS 2. And xmen 1 ( really poor conditions but not graded and bagged like yours)

I swapped thoses two for a sky diving course in 1997

About 5 years ago I went on eBay and repurchased a selected few favourite books for posterity... Just felt wrong not having those days represented

As a kid I collected a few names. I usually bought new names that were just starting or short mini series. I stopped mid high school. We moved about six years ago and my wife made the point that this was going to be the fourth time we moved where I didn’t have to unpack them bc I never took them out of the moving boxes so I dumped everything at a local comic book store for pennies.

Today I wonder if I made a mistake because these small characters have gotten some prime time tv.
Deathstroke and ragman are two that I remember that I had all their stuff and the both have appeared on that Arrow TV show and Deathstroke had an appreance in the last DC movie. Oh well we did need those boxes.

Way back I used to collect Playboy magazines. Had the first 10 or so years. (The articles were amazing.)

Comics I outgrew when I was 8. Not saying anything wrong with collecting them, they just hold no appeal for me.

Some of those old back issues can be really valuable. Condition is everything!

I actually read through my Amazing Spider-man # 4 issue today from cover to cover and had such a great time feeling so nostalgic. I snapped this cool shot announcing the upcoming first issue of the Avengers.

These bring back fond memories! I remember first getting into comic books when McFarlane first started pencilling ASM. Then there was that amazing run of Jim Lee's on Uncanny X-men. Some truly rare collectible comic books have been posted on this thread. already. Thanks for sharing.

My comic book collection is beat to heck from the late 70's into the 80's. I bought them to read and not so much collect. My collection consists mostly of war comics like Sgt. Rock.

I liked that they killed Nazis. Mom wasn't a fan. She didn't like that I watched A-Team too

Oh, I have loads of Mad Magazines
