I used to own 15400, no longer do, but I still prefer the looks of 15400 over 15500. The dial of 15400 is just about perfect.

The absolute craziness of the watch market the past year and a half has changed the landscape dramatically. I'm not sure if things will ever return to the way it used to be. Crazy times!!!

I would think that when the 15550 comes out there will be a price increase to follow, but any idea if the 15450 will have a price increase until the new release?

The AP website is down right now (probably for updates)

Interesting. I always thought of it as the achilles heel. Again I do not dislike the 15400 every watch has something I do not like. On the 15400 it was the obvious upsizing of the case while keeping the undersized cal 3120 from the 39mm 15300. I owned and enjoyed two 15400s and it was my entry into AP back in 2014.

New watch lovers will always gear towards the new hot toy. Present owners will always say their previous generation is better.

Similar things were said about the 15300 vs. 15400.

I do say the 15400 vs. 15500 with the same case size is now a better comparison.

Based on aesthetics alone, here are my initial comments on 15400: I am not a fan of the new minute tracker and date. It makes the dial appear smaller (or perhaps it is psychically smaller). The dial is huge part of the RO, and to take even slightly away from is distracting especially with another element/layer the minute tracker adds. I personally do not like the lack of the "automatic" words. I agree with the others about dial balance, but ultimately reminds me of the current/past past AP line up where missing "automatic" means quartz movement. Not a fan of anything thicker than the 15400, it will make of the watch feel bulkier and larger.

And also... the lack of the silver dial = I'll keep my 15400 for now.

...

On value, the 15400 will rise, it's very typical. New MSRP on the 15500 will push the 15400 typically. With all the mixed reviews, I think many will still go for the 15400 (if obtainable). It's a watch, not a car. Values don't drop just because something new and shiny comes out.

I have a blue 15400 and to me it is very close to perfection. My only complain with it has been the very thin lume slits in the hands and fatter lume in the hour indices ... this never made sense to me.

15500 fixes this and the hands are now fat with lume. On the flipside, I much prefer the placement of the date window on the 15400 ... 15500 is too close to the edge and overlapping the minute tracker (of which I am not a fan either) ... it looks off.

Movement changes, I am indifferent. I am sure the larger caliber will look great if they left a chunky gold rotor (vs. a skeleton).

The shade of blue appears darker on the 15500. The electric blue of the 15400 is amazing and hard to top.

Overall, it is a tough choice. Classic vs sportier. Both beautiful.

Going to have to see them side-by-side in the metal. Always felt the 15400 was a little thicker than it should/could be so even a small increase in thickness is probably going to detract from it for me when on the wrist.

Agree. The 15400 looks more pleasing aesthetically.

Not picking on you, OP, but you brought up some good points here as an owner of the 15400.

The relative sizes of the hands to the markers always looked good to me.

Yes, we haven't seen any lume shots of the 15500 yet, but I imagine they'll look really nice, and are appropriate if the 15500 is going for a sportier image.

I don't mind the date too much where it's at on the 15400, but I prefer it closer to the edge. The date being so far from the edge just reminds us that the movement is small for this case, so is held in place by a large spacer. This is more apparent, of course, through the caseback.

That said, I agree that the date is a smidge too far towards the edge on the 15500. But I prefer it (slightly) over the date window on the 15400.

Yeah, I bet if you held them both in your hands at the same time and viewed the casebacks, the 15400 movement would pale in comparison, as it is MUCH smaller. The newer caliber gives you a greater power reserve, at the very least, runs at 4 Hz instead of 3, and may prove to be more robust. And it does have a chunky gold rotor, only partially skeletonized. Considering the size difference of the movements, the gold rotor on the 15500 is likely heavier than that on the 15400.

I think the movement differences are worthwhile, but it's a trade-off if the extra thickness (but still pretty thin for a 41mm watch) bothers you.

It does appear to be closer to the blue of the 15202 in the pictures so far, but I'm not sure how accurate those are. I think many pictures of the blue 15400 on the internet aren't quite right, for example.

Agreed.

Oh, and the 15500 is priced at $19,200, is that correct? The 15400 was $17,800.

Thanks for taking the time to read :)

I didn't mean the size of the hands ... hands are fine ... I am referring to the lume IN the hands which is very thin whereas the lume in the dial itelsf is thicker. If anything, it should be the other way around or they should be the same as in earlier series of the 15400 (I had a black and a silver in the past).

This also makes the hands appear darker and harder to read.

Once again do not stress guys! Your 15400 will not be worth nothing as soon as 15500 pops up. This ain’t a car market.
Especially owners of blue and silver dial. For different reason but they will still be (or become) rare out there.
Finally, increase in MSRP will help with keeping value.

By the way, will collect my 15400 blue tomorrow... Super excited

What perfect timing! How long did you have to wait for this piece?

Not too long... I would say 4 months which is short for that piece (I would assume).
I got very nice contact with the people at the boutique which might have helped (a lot!).

I would imagine that the white/silver dial 15400 increases in value since there will no longer be an option to buy this dial variation in the current 15500 line-up

The dial of 15500 is a bit too sporty and empty for my taste. Yes the smaller movement on 15400 may not be perfect, but no one complains about the movement on 44mm ROO's. It is not a deal breaker for me.

Wished they had just put in the new movement and maybe move the date window a bit more to the right.

Well the problem was the size issue was reflected on the dial with the strange date position as a permanent reminder. I remember the same thing on the older Lange 1 where the two subdials crossed over each other like a Venn diagram. At first I thought it looked cool and unique but then when I learned it was a movement issue and not a design choice I couldn't buy one and they later corrected it.

I completely agree!

At first I thought the date window was flush between the tapisserie dial and the minute track, until I saw a detailed photo from Monochrome! It’s actually shocking!

They should have done a tapisserie dial edge to edge - why they didn’t is beyond me! It would have been absolutely perfect but I just can’t get over this eye soar!

An afterthought at best.

It looks like a defect on the date design

Anyhow, due to the scarcity on both 15400 and 15500 especially on the blue dial, the price will keep rising...

This... just doesn't look right to be honest.

Think I'll stick with my 15400.

It certainly looks sportier with the minute track and new date font, colour looks petrol still but maybe less vibrant, think we need a wrist shot in the sun.

That one is pre-owned with no box and no papers.

The Chrono24 search results aporrolex posted are for new/unworn pieces.

Not really apples to apples.

Well, with the larger new movement, all they have to do is re-position the date window a bit further way from the center. They could've and should've kept the rest of the dial, including markers and hands.....

Interesting review of the 15500. Reading the conclusion, it looks like the guy wants to criticize but is afraid to do so.
