Thanks. It should be on a dressier strap really, to look original, but it's quite large for its time (1965), with very thick lugs, so I'm trying it out on this more casual one

Being that it says chronometer on the dial did Seiko send it to COSC like the Swiss? Seems like I heard about how that used to work with Seiko and have since forgotten. And I would like to learn.

The Swiss didn't like Seiko using the word Chronometer on the dial and I think the above model and its predecessor (the first GS) were the only GS that used it. After that Seiko set their own, higher tmekeeping standards for Grand and King Seiko, and soon ended up dominating the Swiss chronometer competition so heavily that it was suspended.

And then, after being outright beaten to mass-production of quartz despite a head start (the Swiss entered quartz movements into competitions before Seiko did), they later convinced people that Japanese just do "cheap quartz." This despite the fact that also making cheap quartzes (Swatch) is what saved the watch industry, so that ironically we can have mechanical Swiss watches now and pooh-pooh quartz.

The only reasons Switzerland is still on top are design and branding. Seiko can't get out of its own way with Presage and Prospex and excess confusing branding and too many GS models. I don't know why Japan is so bad at Western branding...but they're objectively better at manufacturing watches. The only reason to get a Swiss one is if you think it looks cool! Which, it turns out, is the most important thing.


Edit: The term "quartz crisis" could more accurately be described as "the time period where Japanese watchmaking dominated." The end of the "quartz crisis" for Switzerland was the beginning of a "crisis" for Japan.
