At one time I had four different OQ’s: WG day-date, 17014, 17013, and a 17000. I sold them off as I was downsizing my Rolex collection. I found that I became ambivalent with the OQ’s. Fine watches, just not for me.

Gracias!

The 19018's and 19019's first production runs had horizontal brushing and chamfered edges.

The later production runs have the vertical brushing and rounded links, and are known as 19018N and 19019N.

All pyramid style 19028's have vertical brushing and rounded links.

I posted a comparison on another thread here - https://www.rolexforums.com/showpost...1&postcount=75

reposting:

The 19018/9 (pre 1985) have chamfers, a polygonal shape, and horizontal brushing

The 19018/9N links (post 1985) don't have chamfers. Instead they have an oval profile and vertical brushing.

Thank you for the info and the pictures! For me the difference now is obvious for the bracelets, but what about the casing? Were the 1985+ models still chamfered, or these became rounded too?

I've just made a quick search on Chrono24, and it seems that the change happened in about ~1979/1980, as the new design seems to be appeared at that time. For me this date would sound a more reasonable, as that was the time when the design of the 170xx series were also changed.

This is great. Thanks! Didn't know about the 19018N and 19019N suffix for the curved lugs.

17014 bought in 1986

Hello, I have inherited a Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust 17014 with bracelet 17010 from my late grandad who bought it in 1986 in the UK. I have the papers but no box for it.

I have the watch currently being restored and serviced as it was quite damaged when I received it.

Would anyone know the exact type of box it would of came in so that I can try and source one or even better know where I might get one from? (I'm from the UK)

Thanks

Jonathan

Nice piece you inherited, why do you need the box? Having a "complete set" only matters if you feel it adds value at time of sale? If you are restoring to keep/enjoy I don't see a need for a box.

You can look through some photos on this thread to see the type of box if you choose to go that route FYI.

Where did you send it for service?

I am considering joining the OQ family. There is one available at a shop near me. The asking price seems agreeable at 5 grand, so I almost impulse bought it on the spot.

However, I am concerned with longevity. May I ask for thoughts on lifespan of the internals? After the cut off date for Rolex official service, is there any aftermarket support?

Thanks in advance for entertaining my nieve newbie questions.

IMHO, the OQ is the ONLY quartz watch that has the soul of a mechanical watch. Crazy, I know, but I have found it to be true.

Considering the OQ is in my top 5 favorite watches ever and I've owned so many I would love to chime in.

Rolex, as we read usually keeps enough parts in support for a model for around ~30 years post ending. Meaning if the Last 17000 allegedly rolled off the line around 2001-2002, then we are good on parts no questions asked until the early 2030's.

Like others have posited and posted, the OQ is literally the king of Quartz watches. That Rolex "tick" cannot be duplicated lol

Right now, Rolex (Dallas) charges about $800 for a movement service on an OQ that includes complete breakdown, replacement of worn parts and testing to include a new battery.

Once you start getting into replacement dials, links, it starts to add up
$500 for a new dial and $70 per link, Crown is about $80 and new glass is around $180.

After all that, you will be getting a waterproofed Quartz Rolex that Keeps time as well as if not better than a sub or DJ.

the original beauty of the OQ line used to be that you could snag one for a couple grand at most (pre 2016) and it was an absolute value play and really unique.

Now it seems the cat has been let out of the bag and people realize not only how niche these pieces are but how rare they really are.

Will this hit Sub Comex value down the road?, not at all. But is the OQ line a cool and trendy piece that offers absolute value and great time keeping, absolutely.
Best part is you can wear it, leave it alone and when you want to pick it back up, no winding!!

My honest opinion is a 17000 should be under 4K and a good example 17013/17014 should be under 5K (although it seems lately the 17000's are commanding a premium)

I just picked up a Mk1 Dial 17000 for $4100 from Japan (a large number of OQ's come from Japan as the watch did well there in the 80's and 90's)

I think OysterQuartz are just so incredibly underrated. Their price is just far too low for how cool of a distinct look/feel they offer!

Had a fresh battery installed today and the rolex watchmaker (Ben Bridge) mentioned that when watches come in they run serials to ensure watches aren’t stolen, etc…

Turns out my 5.4 serial came up as invalid. We got to talking and was told when watches come up invalid rolex procedures call to send the watch into Rolex.

Luckily I was able to just leave with it but makes me wonder why

You can always send it into the RSC, its a gamble but you will know for sure. I know any used watch I purchased when it needs service I send it to RSC for a few reasons.

1. Proper authentication
2. Knowing its not stolen or registered stolen
3. Proper overpriced TLC

I have a 17013 with a steel replacement bracelet... I need some spares for the original two-tone bracelet? Anyone know where to buy? Or have some to sell?

Have you tried the classified section specifically --> Rolex Watch Accessories, Parts & Novelties?

There is usually alot of parts offered there, or a local watchmaker with some old parts or past account?

Good Luck

This is my 17013 that I bought for a steal at $3100 on eBay. It's a two-tone with the white Roman dial. It ran when I bought it but was gaining about 1 second a day and unknown service history. Considering it's an early 1976 model I figured it was worth taking to the RSC. They replaced a few internal electronics and the date disc which cost a little over 2k. All said I got an Oysterquartz that is serviced and under warranty for about 5k total.

I always wanted an Oysterquartz since I first got into watches about a decade ago, so needless to say this will remain in my collection for the foreseeable future.

It did, and I would argue that the 9F is Seiko's direct answer to the 5035, and nobody builds quartz movements like this any more, not even Rolex.
