What a find! Looks stunning with those modern Rolex features (etched coronet and closed number date wheel). I wonder how many NOS may be out there today.

I envy all the sharp edges on the examples seen above, but I am still very happy with mine considering it's been used its entire life of 34 years.

Very unique. In general it seems gold always has softer edges on these older pieces, just the nature of the metal I suppose.

I gotta commend anyone who rocks one. The fake Rolex impression and potential comments would annoy the crap out of me.

Yes, must be the softness of gold, still I have seen a couple of NOS like gold OQs and those look really sharp.

Absolutely agree. People just seeing the watch may jump to conclusions, but once I tell them the story of the OQ the majority end up having a lot of respect for the watch. Dare I say they start to look for one for themselves.

You'd think Rolex would have taken the care to invent some sort of mechanism that would allow for a smoother movement of the seconds hand. If they bring them back and fix this glaring problem, they'll be looking at a huge success (my opinion).

I'm not sure about this. Even though this movement is basically a carbon copy of an auto and has great finishing it never was a success. People associate quartz with "cheap" plain and simple. Even if the seconds hand didn't exist or they made it glide, especially in 2020 i'm not sure if anyone would care. It is funny seeing so many AP models offered in Quartz though, who knows?

I understand what you're saying. Well at the very least if the seconds hand glided, then the oysterquartz wouldn't be that stigma of fake perception by onlookers.

Rolex had a “V2” movement ready for an updated Oysterquartz model to be launched in the early 2000s. That never happened but some of the prototypes still exist and the movement featured a lot of improvements. No smooth seconds hand but it had a perpetual calendar and a minute hand that moved in half steps. The loud tick also went away to be silent.

I think our best chance for an OQ v2 is with a new exotic escapement, i think the die is cast on Quartz == Cheap.

More about Rolex & Exotic escapements (no mention of OQ thats speculation on my part):

the Oysterquartz Perpetual prototype is very interesting, but I gotta say, the original OQ movement is much more beautiful.

The prototype is not really cool when compared with the original OQ v2

This is exactly why this thread exists!
When people say a quartz movement is beautiful!!!
I agree, the prototype looks like a block of metal.

I have seen only two OQ’s in the wild. A 17000 and a 17013. I am considering buying one for a project and sending it in to be restored back to new before the end of the year. The OQ has so much character and you rarely see them. They can be a great conversation piece.

I love OQ it’s my favorite Rolex without any doubt. There are so many mysteries around the OysterQuartz that makes it the most interesting Rolex watch for sure. I have the hope the will remake it that case and bracelet in quartz or in auto. In different sizes 36mm, 38mm and 40mm but I have started to believe that’s just my dream because I have waiting for so many years that really don’t know anymore.
I am kind a sure Rolex does not remakes them to do not put PP and AP in checkmate imho.
Glad to see this post and I will post more OQ pictures in the future.
