Would you or have you ever considered..

chopping multiple mid tier pieces for 1 top draw high end piece?

As a watch lover , the ultimate Rolex in my eyes is the Platinum Daytona.

Not fussed whether the regular hazel sub dials or the more desirable baguette Diamond dial.

Due to a combination of unobtainium from an AD & crazy grey prices it’s not a watch I thought I’d ever have the opportunity to own.

However, I’ve come to realise that if I were to part chop all or the majority of my current collection I might not be a million miles away from having the funds to get one, even though that would still mean paying the premium from a grey dealer due to the AD situation.

Has anyone else ever considered doing something like this?

The only thing at the back of my mind is if I would be happy with just the one top draw watch compared to the variation afforded by owning multiple low to mid tier pieces?

Yes from a complication perspective. If I can trade in a perpetual calendar plus a chronograph for a perpetual calendar chronograph, I will do it.

Two questions: 1. Would that become your only watch? 2. Have you ever tried the platinum Daytona on? It is quite heavy, it’s a commitment for sure.

If I were trading everything for one watch, it would need to be one I could wear anywhere doing practically everything. For me, that's not a Daytona.

Did exactly that to get my Platona. Now reverting a bit as I got tired of it and moving those funds into some alternative pieces and reversing the trend. Went from 22 watches to four at one point. I documented it here about four years ago.

I think the idea is sound but don't get rid of basics like a sub or steel Daytona if you have one. Even with a platona I'd still want to wear a steel one often enough.

I have consolidated several times and always get tired of the one piece that I consolidated for. I did the Platinum Daytona a few years ago with the diamond markers. Beautiful watch but after a short time I moved it along. Sometimes for me it is about achieving the watch, other times it is about bringing the collection down to a manageable number that can get regular wear. Most of the time though it is just about having fun. I have been on a white metal phase for a bit now and only have one YG Rolex and two TT Tudors. Times and our tastes change over the years.

I would do that, but not for a Daytona, especially one in platinum.

I'm with these gentlemen.

Not as extreme as trading everything for 1 watch, but I've thought about consolidating /slimming down a bit from my current collection of 10 to around 4. Doing so would mean trading a few to get an AP.

I realized that 1.) I really like variety and options and 2.) I would probably get bored with 4. I realize 4 watches is still somewhat of a larger collection to some, but hey - I'm a WIS and need more, more, more!

I think the best advice is to get rid of watches with which you aren't ecstatic. It doesn't matter what the watch is. I got rid of a SD4K, a SkyD blue, an SS black dial Daytona, an 1803 Day Date, a 14060 Sub, a 16700 Pepsi, and a bunch others. They all didn't live up to what I was after. I've no regrets.

Many have tried, many have failed. It’s a common idea but it depends on what “grail piece” you are looking at to see if it will fit your lifestyle realistically.

1. Are you still a ‘watch lover’ if you sell all your watches for one watch? Or just curiously attracted to a Platinum Daytona?

2. A good rule for luxe goods is if you can’t afford to buy it twice you shouldn’t buy it.

I’d ask myself those first and if you’re fine. Go for it and enjoy it.

I would still want a nice SS reference left to pair with it. I like the idea but don't think I could be a one watch guy. Two or three - yes.

I chopped in a couple of subs and a car for a Nautilus 5712 and ended up buying back one of the subs

Some act as if this sort of thing is a final act. It's not, it's a step in a journey in the hobby. Nothing saying that watches can't be added in the future. I know I certainly have. I like my collection far more now then prior to my paring down and getting a grail.

Something I considered but just don’t like to sell any of my watches.
Too much hassle and trouble

Do what feels right to you.

Personally I like the heavier or more desirable pieces in my collection at this point - I’ve had a good variety of pieces over the years. Good to switch things up.

OP, I have recently considered going from a collection to a few special pieces. IMHO worthy of consideration. I think a Playtona would be worth trimming the herd wayndown.

- If you’re consolidating cheaper watches (Seiko, Oris, etc.) to a higher tier watch like a Submariner, then absolutely.
- But multiple higher tier watches, to one fancy-pants watch, no way.

My thoughts:

I would never discourage a fellow WIS from getting his grail, but, as Lee noted above, I think you've got to go into the situation understanding it's a process, a part of the journey, if you will.

Yes, maybe the Platona will be nirvana for you and will produce a state of contentment, so that you never want another watch, but...odds are, it won't. So, at least be ready for the possibility of that and leave yourself enough so that you can move on if it's not.

On that topic, do some checking around before purchasing and see what a dealer would offer you for one. I fully understand that's probably going to be a worst case scenario, but you can at least build a baseline for recovery from it.

Good luck and keep us posted.

What, exactly, is a fancy-pants watch?

A double tourbillon perpetual calendar split seconds chrono equation of time minute repeater with a case made of composite moon dust, Saturn diamond indices. And interchangeable straps.

This one comes close, but missing a few complications and the astronomical geology.

I checked and I'm only 132 submariners short on trade value.
