Help!! ROO Team Alinghi 26062 Carbon

Hi guys,

New to this forum and never won an AP in my life.

Happened to see someone selling the ROO Alinghi Carbon and wondering if some experienced folks here can get me some guidance.

1) What's the upside and downside for having a Carbon ROO
2) How bad does this watch depreciate its value, worth buying this versus a brand new ROO?
3) Is this worth buying and what's a reasonable price range for this
4) I saw on forum saying carbon bazel is not recommended given it can be dented quite easily, is that mean i shouldn't be buying one online?
5) Most importantly, what is the difference between the ones with Red/White Alinghi logo and those only in Red?

Wish someone here can give me some expertise as i basically know nothing about AP watches. Thanks for your help!

Honestly thats not the way i would start with AP. I personally think you need to be very familiar with the brand and models to buy used, and especially so online.

I would start by going to an AD and trying on watches and to see what sizes and materials appeal to you most. Then select a watch either new from an AD or slightly used from a reputable seller who also can provide the service history as knowing that is essential to buying used.

I agree, altho this is not a well faked model I would start on a current prod model that you can try on at an ADs.

It has some significance as the first forged carbon watch that AP presented, and AP has since discontinued the use of forged carbon.

My understanding is that the forged carbon on these models was not as good as later models, the case was more susceptible to wear and flaking.

I also remember back in the day the discussion around the "white frame" and "no frame" Alinghi logos - the "white frame" ones were declared to be rarer than the "no frame" ones and were traded at a premium.

If you are to buy one, I'd be very picky about the service history, condition of the carbon and the PVD caseback/buckle. I've seen quite a few ones that look in really bad shape., the bezels are all rounded. Also, the market for these seem to have significantly softened - I remember back in the day when they were released they were trading for huge premiums (north of $30K used, close to $40K BNIB). Since then I've seen pieces as low as $17.5K (condition questionable), to north of $30K for NOS. If you buy a good condition one on the lower end of this range your downside will be limited - but it may be hard to find a buyer for this piece.

I also think it looks best on ceramic plots with a black hornback/red stitching:

Not the first AP I would get... and as I understand the FC back then was not great at all...

The alinghi is pretty awesome. When I first got into AP, I jumped to this watch. But it's not worth getting.

As everyone else has said, the carbon on this model sucked. It flakes off, the bezel is crap, the resale market for it DIED. I wouldn't even say it softened, it's practically dead unless you give the watch away.

If you want carbon go for the Carbon ROO ceramic. It's a better way to get into the FC AP world. Anything else is over 100k currently.

There's also the Carbon Diver ($20K or so), the Jarno Trulli, Grand Prix and the Ginza (those are the only LEs I can think of at this time.)

I would take either of those many times over the FC Alinghi, especially the Ginza.

Hi guys, quite surprise how helpful you guys are and appreciate all the informative comments!!!

sounds like this is not something I should consider as a newbie and especially when i am buying online without knowing the condition of the watch. Will give up that idea and start researching on the above mentioned.

Thanks to everyone for your help! Much appreciated!

Thanks to all again for the help!

Am always thinking about limited edition, not necessary to be FC. I actually like the ceramic even better but there are constraints to my budget unfortunately :)

I really like the Grand Prix but will it have the same potential wear and tear problem like the Alinghi in consider it is also made by FC?

Probably a good idea to start with a different piece for your first AP...

Yea but the Ginza is hard to find, the truli is the same, and the GP has the same issues.

And, I just don't like the carbon diver (because of the yellow) so I didn't mention it lol.

Yes, GP does suffer from the same issue as the FC Alinghi. However, it's newer, so easier to find an example with less marring, and by then AP has already improved the quality of the FC somewhat. There are also some GPs where the bezel has been replaced with the Ceramic bezel.

However, I'd recommend the Trulli if you can find one. The combination of different materials (Cermet, FC, titanium), textures (FC patterning, RO finishing on the bezel, sandblasted caseback/pushers/crown/plots) and tones on it is simply stunning:

FC is probably my favourite AP material, but I'm not that into this model. And FC as a bezel material is not the best at it tends to chip and flake. Most likely the reason that other FC models had Ceramic bezels such as the Bumblebee and FC Diver.

For your first piece I'd go with something more "mainstream".

The Trulli is one of my favourite APs. It is just such a great looking watch. If you go for this then major congratulations are in order.

My first AP was a Forged Carbon Diver (with the ceramic bezel).

I knew about the brand before the purchase, it was and still is my favorite watch and I'd do it again without hesitation.
