I have been worried about wearing mine when I go to some places. You hear of these scooter crimes in London who are targeting people with watches. They are easy to spot as many of us don't hide them when we are out.
I have mine insured by a separate insurance company who insure watches.

May I ask which insurance company you use for the watches? I’m struggling finding insurance for mine, and I’m at the limit with what my home insurance will cover on valuables.

Terrible news! Those items can be replaced quite easily. Glad you and your family weren't home.

Very sorry to hear this! I would catalogue the stolen items with the Art Loss Register (aside from police)

I'm interested as well to find out about this specialist insurance company that Waddy1 uses in the UK - sounds like it's a must!

As a side topic - we all buy used Rolexes from fellow members, eBay, Chrono24, and we all check the cases, movements, bracelets etc. for authenticity. But does anyone check if they're buying a stolen watch and how? What would happen if you take it to Rolex for a service in a couple of years, they say it's been reported stolen, and it gets confiscated even though you've fully paid for it?

Rolex will not release it to the individual/AD that has submitted the piece for service once they learn it has been reported stolen or missing. I have heard Rolex contact original owner/AD on Warranty Card .
My issue here with this is original owner may have sold it and following owner(s) sold it again several times over the watches life time. I have had this discussion and feel with the internet a new owner should be able to register their new acquisition with Rolex where now there would be a owners trail to know the legitimate owner of each specific watch.

I hope Rolex have a robust way of checking a watch was indeed stolen, otherwise anyone could just report their watch stolen, sell it to someone and then get it "recovered" a few years later!

Very sorry to hear this.
In my opinion, the best way to keep things in the house is to have a hiding place, not in a safe which would be the first thing to break into.

They do, it's called a police report.

Try Hiscox, some suggest T H March but I found them very, very expensive. Hiscox added mine to my contents insurance with items over £15k specified.

I hope it's not just that because anyone can file a police report with the serial number of any Rolex listed online for sale for example. Should the claimant include other proof of ownership like original sales receipts, pictures etc? Being a bit paranoid here, but imagine it happened to you?

A time pressed burgler will not mess with a safe. A real safe. Not something that can be carried to a nearby field and opened with rudimentary burgler implements anyway.

I certainly feel for anyone who has had a home break in, a terrible sense of vulnerability. But this one I just don't get.

Sorry to hear this.

Do you mind if I ask what kind of safe?
(I'm currently considering a new safe).

Hope you get it sorted soon, one way or another.

Any Safe not bolted to the Floor is not a Safe in my Eyes,It’s a vessel to transport your expensive goods for the Crook.

What do you not get about it? My home was burgled and they had my safe away as I hadn’t got around to bolting it to the floor. I’m not looking for sympathy but I’m curious as to why you’ve suddenly turned into Sherlock Holmes?

Rolex wont mark anything stolen without a police report. Otherwise any Joe Blow can report any watch stolen from a serial number they found on the internet.

That would cause bigger issues.

If the insurance company insisted on the watches being in a safe, a couple I contacted required it, I very much doubt they will pay out if the safe wasn't secured to the floor or wall.

I wouldn't be surprised it happens more often. Most owners do not go online to report it.

I am really sorry for your loss and trauma. Track the serial numbers. That’s how another member found his submariner.

My guideline for your readers is If you own a Rolex that’s worth over $5K get insurance. In the Open Discussion section under ‘A Wild Rolex Day’ there is a complete summary of how insurance works with expensive jewelry.

Good luck!

Sorry for the loss of your watches and the trauma of a break-in. Somebody mentioned you had a watch listed for sale recently (?), perhaps someone got your address posing as an interested party. I would assume the police would have alerts at all the local pawn shops. Otherwise the various classifieds would need to be monitored. Good advice has been offered up by others. Sorry this happened and hope you can recover them.

Rolex can’t play judge, jury and executioner - their policy is to accept the theft report through their channel in your country when it is accompanied by a verifiable police report.

So, yes it is easy upfront. Any scammer making a bogus report will need more on their side if and when the watch is presented to an RSC.

That would cause bigger issues.

Yes - and once a watch on the theft report is presented at an RSC, it is retained. Not confiscated, nor adjudicated. The party presenting the watch gets a nice letter from the Rolex Legal department as does the person who reported the theft.

At that point authorities can be involved, civil remedies initiated and all sorts of things. Seldom is the original thief involved - usually the watch has passed through several hands before the current owner bought it.

Evan an AD can not check the theft report - so they are also at risk of buying stolen property. That’s just how Rolex does it. Glad they do this, though.

I know this is an old thread, and I haven't been involved in it (in other words, I'm quoting your reply to someone else just for subject context).

People are asking you questions not to badger you but to understand what happened so they can learn from it. Was this a 600 pound safe the size of an American refrigerator or was it a little cash box the size of a briefcase and fitted with a convenient carry handle? We are just trying to understand and you've given us nothing.

You make a good point about EXIF data that cameras and smartphones collect. . Not only TRF, but all social media shares that risk when you post photo’s.

Sometimes it’s also date & time you post , context, etc. So a photo of your car, with the license plate visible, can yield a lot of online data that’s publicly available. Even worse, taken in front of your home.

Some of us use Tapatalk to post pictures to avoid sharing the original photo’s EXIF data.

For example, can you glean any location data from this sample picture that I am posting via Tapatalk?
