How accurate is your watch?

I have just purchased a submariner and am very pleased with it so far.

I have a question about accuracy though. I recently noticed that it is gaining about 5 secs per day. Is this normal? I had assumed that any time loss would be much smaller. Am I barking mad or is my watch dodgy?

Many thanks

Jay

Gaining 5 seconds a day is still within COSC guidelines. They are-4/+6 seconds per day. Anywhere with in this range is considered very good!!!

If it is a brand new watch wear it for a few weeks and then set the time exactly.

Monitor from then onwards and you will be very surprised at how accurate it becomes.

New watches take a few weeks to be run in.

My sub has gained 3 seconds in a week. Not bad at all.

Cheers

hi there. My new (to me) 2002 Submariner is currently running 00:01:21 fast in a 24-hour period. That sounds way fast! I don't know that it's been serviced since 2002. Am I correct in assuming the best advise is take it in for a servicing?
Thanks,
JT

Welcome along Jay, let the watch settle for a month or so and then set it against accurist.123.com. Check it at the end of a further month.
My Exp II is currently +14 seconds since October 2008. I had it regulated when it was about 6 months old.
These watches can be exceptionally accurate, but remeber there are 86,400 seconds in one day so +4 seconds is still super accurate.

+ 5 is respectable and within guidelines. My Sub was a bit wild at first. It started of at -2 then slipped to -7 for some reason. Rolex regulated it and it now runs at +2.5. My DJ however has run consistently at +0.5 from the box.

Let it settle a bit and then get it regulated if you want. Record the gain over a 7 day period for a couple of weeks and this will give the Rolex technician the best idea of how the watch wears for you - then it's just a simple tweak.

Gaining

In my opinion my watch , a 2008 DJ 116200, was gaining +7 to +10 sec. a day. The AD told me the watch is accurate.
Grumpy feeling I left the AD and today I went to a independent watch maker, the result :

Glass up 0/+1
Glass down 0/+1
Crown up +2/+3
Crown down +4/+5
Vertical crown right +3/+4
Vertical crown left +3/+4

Watchmaker's statement : Nice going !

Astounding machines. I wear my Daytona (circa '72) every day and it loses less than a minute a week. It's due for service, but in all honesty, if I didn't check I wouldn't notice.

I don't really check it, but I got it back from RSC Dallas almost 2 months ago now and it seems to be still right on the money with my cellphone.

My 16610 is ALWAYS +2 sec per 24 hours. About once a week I pull the stem to the hack position, count to 10 and then push it back in and its good for another week.
My GMT IIc is not quite as well off and may be going in for a warranty checkup. It runs at -10 seconds per 24 hours most days and on some it will gain a few seconds back.

Bring it in for service. First symptom of end of service interval is that the watch will speed up and then slow way down. If it was "new to you" in 2002 it needs to be brought in for service.

Dont worry over a few seconds in 24 hours, the escapement of a mechanical watch pushes the gears 432,000 times. Since a day has 86,400 seconds, even a watch that runs five minutes fast or slow each day has an accuracy of over 99.6 percent! A finer mechanical watch that gains or loses about six to nine seconds a day or about a minute a week has a breathtaking precision of over 99.99 per cent. This is very high precision, given the fact that the movement is constantly affected by the earth's gravity, metal expansion and contraction, temperature variations, subtle changes in lubrication and friction, shocks, and so on.The fact is that no mechanical watch made will keep perfect time, very close yes but perfect no.And if any mechanical watch performs consistently inside the CO SC spec of -4+6 seconds a day don't think anyone could ask anymore from any purely mechanical watch

And any modern day wristwatch chronometers are, by the almost 300 year old 18th century navigational standards imposed on John Harrison,H4 watch, quite laughably inaccurate even by todays standards. How about just 5 seconds slow after 63 days at sea,in one of the toughest environments known to man, not bad for a almost 300 year old watch. Now in those days no modern machinery no computer designs no robots, just his bare hands and crude tools. So next time when you look at your watch and only a few seconds out it wont feel so bad.Your watch is fine just wear it and enjoy it whats in a few seconds a day.

My 16610 has been averaging +2 per day for the past month. I wouldn't worry about yours. Like the posts above say, you're within guidelines and +/-.

If you worry too much, your increased heart rate may affect accuracy.

My year old EXPII is consistently -1.6 sec/day which is about the same as my Omega 2254.50 SMP. My 2255.80 SMP checks in at -.43 sec/day and the co-axial Aqua Terra is +.57.

Bottom line: the Rolex is holding its own with the "Olympic timekeepers". I'm satisfied.

BTW, my 59-year old "bumper" and 44-year old Speedy Pro both maintain COSC specs.

If it's gaining 5 seconds a day consistently it's a superbly accurate watch. Consistency is the key to accuracy. It might need a tweak to regulate if it bothers you, but that's no big deal.

GMTIIC is -2 seconds per day. My Daytona is 0.00 seconds after 56 hours and a full wind. What more could I ask for?

Z series GMT IIc always displays the correct time and I never reset it. I don't track it to the second, but if the computer clock says 2:37 my watch reads 2:37.

Sold my GMTIIC SS that was dead on. Don't know how but it was perfect.

New TT GMT IIC that I wanted (adore the watch, by the way) is not as accurate, about 2-3 seconds slow a day. But, again it has only been a week.

my YM is getting +4 per day with crown up at rest. if positioned crystal up, it increases to +6. so as others have pointed out, it does make difference how the watch is positioned when at rest.
