Perpetual Chrono
Hi All,
My first post in the forum. Price of perpetual calendar chronograph (say 5270) is pretty much similar to QP alone + chronograph. What would be your choice if you had enough budget to buy ? Would you go for 5270 or buy two watch instead ? |

Depends on what you’re gonna do with it/them and if you have other watches in rotation? A manual PCC might be a little frustrating to use as a daily wear.
Also if you were planning on buying from An AD they might not offer you a 5270 without prior purchase history. Especially the 5270P salmon dial. |

I tend to prefer simple and less busy looking dials and would probably go PC plus Chrono rather than PCC.
I might well get a preowned 3940 now and wait for a 5968 from my AD. This makes for an interesting two-watch collection and is quite a bit cheaper than any 5270 new or preowned. Never asked my AD but I am surprised they would not jump on the opportunity to sell a 5270P. Demand has got to be low given how much those have tanked. |

PCC vs PC + chrono. They are all great watches with a long history, as Patek has been producing PCs, chronos and PCCs for the longest time.
It depends on if you are buying pre-owned vs new from AD. If you are in Geneva, I would recommend that you go into the Salon and try on the 5270, several PCs and several chronos. For PCs, there are 5327, 5320, 5159, 5496 and 5740. As for chronos, there are 5172, 5980, 5960, 5905, 5990, 5968 and maybe some discontinued models. |

PCC for me, this is an area where Patek truly excels.

Unless you must have name on the paper, better to buy on the secondary market, prices are weak on 5270, even the platinum the version.

If you are used to a manual wind watch already, a manual wind PCC should be fine. Compared to the 5196, which is very slim, the PCC is going to have some heft to it. 5270 is not too thick compared to say an ACC (5960 or 5905). The manual chrono movement allows for a less thick case compared to a self-wind Chrono.

I would go with both with a PC and a Chronograph as two watches. That way you can leave the PC on the winder when not in use and wind the chrono whenever you want to wear it. This way you can forget them for a while both if you desire. The PCC is a manual perpetual calendar which needs to be wound every day. Sort of a pain unless you are in that. It eventually gets old. Another option is to wind the PCC when you want to wear it and forget about setting the calendar as many owners do.

IT would drive my OCD crazy not to set the calendar when I am wearing :)
I do agree that it is a pain though. what I usually do with my Lange Perpetual manual wind is when not wearing and go to switch out watches.. just wind it up.. So when I do wear it .. usually a week or 10 days at the most out of sync and easier to get back to correct calendar Quote:

I find the thought of wearing a Patek perpetual calendar chronograph every time there's a day in a week very appealing. However, I'd actually struggle to find either a perpetual calendar chronograph, or indeed a chronograph and a perpetual calendar watch from the current collection that I'd buy. At this sort of level, everything has to be perfect - and that includes having coherent fonts that don't look cheap across the dial.

Considering a 5327. This thread made me consider a 3970. Almost same price (BNIB PC and the preowned PCC).

One thing i am grappling with in reading up on PCCs is that all are manual wind.
I guess harks back to pocket watch days. Just can’t contemplate a perpetual that’s not automatic. Anyway, there must be a reason all PCCs are manual wind. |
