DJ or DJ II?

I am closing in on a professional/eductational goal and once I have completed it, I will likely be buying my first Rolex. Initially I was set on a Datejust with the black stick dial and oyster bracelet. I went to the AD this weekend and tried one and it felt a little small. I then tried on a Datejust II with black stick dial and I am now torn. I am used to wearing a Baume et Mercier Classima GMT (42mm) so I don't know if the Datejust feeling small was just a natural reaction based on what I am used to. To me the DJ II is a dress watch with sport watch dimensions and would likely be fine to wear with a suit and fine for my field (investment management). However, I am also worried that in a few years if the pendulum swings back to smaller watches, the DJ II will look dated. On the other hand I am concerned the DJ is more exclusively a dress watch and wouldn't work as well for casual settings/dress.

Would someone who has gone through this same debate or owns both be willing to comment?

Thanks.

I own an air-king and sub LV. I find the 40mm is too much size for the office but that is just me. Many here will say 40 is fine. About the future. We can only look at the past and how long has 36mm been in fashion for a datejust compaired to a 40mm datejust.

If your set on a DJ and are used to 42mm, then get a DJII. It's good for all occasions, although it does dress up nicely.

I am wearing a DJ II and I feel that due to its size, it can be dressed up or down. Moreover, it is the size that attracts me especially with the bigger fluted bezel, it made the DJ II even more distinct.

Most of the time I found myself looking at the watch itself rather than the time.

DJII without a doubt IMHO. If and when the HUGE watch craze disappears and I too believe it will I still think the 40-42mm range will be more than acceptable

If you find the DJ II better for its size then get that. Don't worry about the larger size popularity in the future, you bought it because it felt the right size for you not because of the craze. I have a TT DJ II.

Get what you think feels better on the wrist. Don't worry about fashion trends. I have many 36mm watches and I love them.

The big watch is just a trend. It wont be hot forever and you will see a lot more people going back to wearing the 36mm DJ. I personally like the DJ better then the DJII, I think the DJII is bulky and nothing beats the classic that is the original DJ!

Make your first rolex the "one you have had in your sights" all these years and get the DJ. Its a true classic and ideal size for all occasions.

The DJII with its out of proportion bezel is just waay too blingy IMHO and probably not the low key, subtle look that goes well with a business suit or a polo shirt.

Go classic!!!

Same feeling (small) when a change my Superocean to my DJI.
But it is such a nice piece and comfortable to wear.

Ultimately you have to make the decision you will be most comfortable with. I also looked at both the DJ and DJII before deciding which one to get. I am 6'3" with 7 1/4 inch wrist and the DJ looked to small for me.

I have a couple of watches but I generally end up wearing the DJII anytime I wear jeans. I would have no problem wearing it with a suit either, however I generally don't wear suits.

However this is what works for me. If you don't think it will work for you, then find something that will.

The 36mm felt too small, I have owned the DSSD, Breitlings,Omega PO 45mm, and various TAG aquaracers and after those the 36mm feels a little like wearing one of the wife's watches.

try em both on, one will feel better than the other for you. I knew straight away I couldn't live with the original DJ.

I can go either way on the DJ.

The 36mm seems more classic yet the bigger size of the DJii looks really nice on the wrist. Hard to pick just one....

Thanks! Its the one used as the mascot on Rolex's website featuring DJ II models. I got hooked when I saw that on there but their photography tricks & lighting do contribute a small part of it

There is nothing like the beautiful hand set on the dj2. Just a bit bigger then on the original dj, that contributed to my choosing over the 36m...

I say go for whatever you think will fit your wrist properly. I tried on a DJII and felt that it was too big for my wrist. The 36mm DJ looks great on my wrist, I have also seen some 36mm watches look to be on some people wrists and a 34mm would look better. It reallt depends on your wrist size and how the watch sits on the wrist.

Was the Classima a white or silver dial? That itself makes a watch look larger, IMO. So, I wonder if it was partly looking at the black dial that influenced your response to the DJs.

Would it be worth trying them again, but with a white dial, to really see how you like or don't like the sizing?

Good idea, I'll have to give it a try with the white.

DJ is too small for me unless i'm wearing long sleeves. I don't feel that 41mm is considered in the "big watch" trend. 46mm and larger is what I consider a "Big" watch...after all the DJII is only 1mm larger than a sub.

Love the DJ II,especially the TT with the ivory baton dial,i think the 36mm is a tad too small for me.

DJII...........its gotta be........heck, DJs are barely big enough for women these days. People are getting bigger, generation to generation and 36mm just doesn't cut it anymore.

I love the DJ II, SS, Black Dial, Stick Markers..........just a classically good looking watch.

Enjoy!!!!!
