Fluted Rolex Bezel
I recently purchased a Datejust II with a fluted bezel. The bezel isn’t “sharp”. It dances with the light but the individual bezel cuts aren’t “sharp” per se. I have a friend with a new SkyDweller and the cuts are super sharp.
Was my watch over buffed and polished or... Is this just the design of the Datejust II bezel? Thanks! |

Did you purchase pre owned? They wear over time.

I don’t know if they were manufactured in the same way.
Fluted bezels can be recut

My understanding is fluted bezels don’t get polished, but I could be wrong on that

I have four DJ2’s and the bezel cuts are all super crisp and sharp.
I saw a TT DJ2 for sale in Watchfunder recently, and the bezel had been so over polished it looked almost like it had melted. So to answer your question, yes, DJ2 bezels were as sharp as any other fluted DJ at point of sale. More strikingly so to the eye because the fluted bezel of the DJ2 is as big as they’ve ever been in the history of Datejust. |

Yeah it looks polished, more than it should be I think. Here’s mine I bought it in 2014 new. This is a recent photo.

Here’s a pic of how they should look when new.
None of these have been polished. |

Its because its been polished and the bezel looks way overpolished to be honest. The bezel scallops dont even look like they exist much anymore.
Thats why I hate buying any second hand watch that has a fluted bezel - if the polishing is not done correctly all the sharp edges on the bezel goes away. |

Get a new bezel on that bro! that one is highly polished I'm afraid.
No you can't re-cut bezels, they are diamond cut in the factory by Rolex. Fluted bezels are a replacement item when you get the watch serviced, so you may have to go for a full service with Rolex to get a new bezel. Part of the magic or allure of a fluted bezel is the sparkling sharp flutes which glisten in the light. A polished bezel loses that effect.

My wife’s DJ31 is in service now and I asked about replacing the fluted bezel on that as it’s a little worn. Cost to replace is £1k, so I imagine a DJ2 fluted bezel replacement might be half as much again?

Yes, it should be sharp cut and was when new. It appears it was just a poorly executed polish job. BUT, it's still an attractive watch. You could have it recut if its only a couple hundred or something, but not really worth it -probably- to spend a grand to get another "sharp" bezel. Just wear and enjoy, it's still a handsome watch.
