5270 Collector's Response 2 Year's Later...

It's been two years since this newest Perp Calendar Chrono was introduced at BaselWorld. When I saw it, I loved it. IMO, simplistic yet bold, elegant with much less clutter than it's predecessor.

However, I did not pull the trigger back in 2011. I have heard... "way overpriced".. "they didn't sell too many".. "collector's would rather their 5970's".. etc etc. Two years later, does it still carry the same "stigma"? Prices have dropped significantly on them and I am wondering if it is the right time to pick one up? Looking forward to collector's thoughts.

Well it is quite personal and subjective of course. It is a nice watch and a true grail to most. I am one who prefers the 3970P with silver dial so to each his own. I think in the end one can't go wrong with any of Patek PC Chrono. So to answer your question has it grown on me or do I feel need to get one? No--not for me. Cheers,

PS. Is it right time to pick one up? Only if one truly wants one badly enough. The price has come down and they can be had for a good deal relative to when it was first released.

They can in fact be had for a great price right now.

The market on them is very soft. I do think that collectors feel now with the new in house movement many can now be made vs when lemania was supplying movements PP was limited by supply by lemania.

I think in the coming years we will see a strong rebound but hey who knows my cystal ball could be short circuiting today

G'day everyone..

I bought a 5270 (sealed) in Asia last year around august for my husband's bd. I paid around USD166k.. Price dropped? How much are they on the market now? His watch is still sealed, he no like leather strap for our tropical climate, so this is a collection pcs. Thanks for your kind feedback. Cheers!

Btw a friend of mine walked into a AD in Singapore, paid cash for a 5131 at MSRP around USD75k (ie no premium)! I have put in my deposit for one, hope I don't have to wait too long. Other than the engraved wording in the bezel, the dial is stunning in person!

OP, great photos! jen

I love the piece and am one of the few who prefer it to the 5970 aesthetically. Future value and collectibility are very important especially when at this level of watch collecting (176.3k retail is not chump change ;) They can be found brand new for almost 25% off current retail .. I would like to think it's a good deal.. but who know's the the future holds.

They can be had from 135 to 145 in the US

I have seen 135k used and in the low 140's new. The die hard collectors seem to prefer the 5970 bec it had a more limited run and like the dial displays better. I actually prefer all the aperture indicators of the 5270. So as a personal choice I would go with a 5270. Same for value. For investment the 5979 is prob a better choice.,,,

It may be true that collectors are worried about overproduction. IMO, based on the number of 3970s and 5970s I see that are factory sealed still floating around on grey dealer sites, they produced more of those models than they could sell to collectors. Perhaps I am missing something, but it does seem pretty easy to find those previous models factory sealed, though at much higher than previous retail values since it is now discontinued. Will they produce even more of the 5270s than the 3970 and 5970 models if the latter are still floating around factory sealed? No idea. Hopefully not, because it wouldn't be too kind to collectors buying the 5270. Hopefully they will produce the same amounts at a quicker pace as I have seen suggested in this article:

I hope so. It is a beautiful piece. History likes to repeat itself!
