Some pretty awesome classic American Italian places on Arthur Ave. And don’t sleep in Madonia Bakery.

Yes, I know NY steaks, as Tokio sushi, London clubs or Mexican mezcal. New rule: from now on, only natives can comment and do reviews. Especially of NY! Which, come to think of it, impedes you from commenting on swiss watches from now on ;)

Hey Finster!
Here’s my thought: Since you don't seem to have a problem getting in there, you and I next fall for a mini GTG at Luger’s.

-nice strap, by the way!

Man I wish I was a baller that gets seated at the hottest steak houses in town. But truth is....

Great Neck Long Island, I’d say 75% of the time anyone can call for a last minute Saturday night reservation. I live in Queens, that location is super convenient for last minute dinners.

Now go to Great Neck on a Monday at 1:50pm like I just did, and you’ll have a 100% chance of being seated.

Brooklyn is a pain in the butt. I see you’re from NYC, I’m surprised you haven’t been able to get a table with a little planning.

Send me evidence of your NY residency via PM and I’ll share with you the secret handshake needed to get in.

What lol? Read the prior posts by me in this thread lol. I have family involved in every aspect of peter lugers, benjamins, wolfgangs, roccos, empire steakhouses. I dont pay to get in, i dont need to make a reservation, i dont wait on a line.

My advice on not waiting prior was for a tourist to pay the $50 to manager that way they wont wait more than an hour to be seated.

ill tell you about the secret handshake( wait there isnt one)

Oh shoot my bad Big Boy. I was talking to Crew, but clicked your profile inadvertently.

And no there isn’t a secret handshake, I was being sarcastic. I’ve never had a problem getting a reservation and I ain’t nobody.

Greasing the gatekeeper helps, but I’ve never done so and have been seated with a two drink wait. That however was back in probably 2005.

Go hit the Big Texan in Amarillo, TX and see if you can down their 72 ounce steak with all sides in the allotted one hour time limit. Are you a big eater?

Been there, enjoyed the small filet.

I asked my waiter how big the contest steak was compared to my 12 oz filet. He said "your steak was 9oz, to win you have to eat a steak the size of your placemat and 4" thick, plus the baked beans & cornbread." The smallest contestant taking up the challenge won while I was there.

The best part was the limo ride to & from the hotel in a white extended Caddy with longhorns adorning the grill.

No but the wife and I were there many years ago. Saw two strippers being filmed trying the challenge. Not only have to eat a 72 ounce steak, but also shrimp cocktail, salad, baked potato and roll. Insane. If you eat it all in an hour then the meal is free and your name goes on their wall and on their website. As they say everything is bigger in Texas!

Just as a frame of reference, this behemoth is only 40.32 oz and that includes bone!!

I didn’t read every post here - did anyone say if the 72oz is bone in or sans bone?

Go to The Big Texan website! You will see the steak. 4.5 pounds. I believe it is boneless. Don't quote me though. That is a ton of calories.

UPDATE: It finally happened! I have a confirmed reservation at the Brooklyn Peter Luger.
I started this thread back in 2019 after many years being unable to get a dinner-hour reservation on our annual trip to NYC for a long weekend of sightseeing, shopping and dining. That is, we did this until Covid stopped us. We had no plans to go this year because of time constraints, however when Ian hit SW Florida we were forced to cancel our visit to Naples. My partner, Nancy, saw that the Phantom of the Opera announced that they were shutting down in the near future. We decided to get tickets as it’s one of our favorite musicals. I then started looking for dinner reservations and immediately hit the Luger website. We will be dining mid-week (which probably helped vs a weekend night) and I’m looking forward to scratching this off my bucket list.
I did find something a little ironic in making this reservation. Our confirmation made note that Peter Luger only accepts cash and their in-house CC. However, they require you to confirm your reservation with a CC # that will be charged a no-show fee if you fail to cancel without enough notice. Whatever.
I’ll report back in late November if the Luger wait was worth it and if the steak lives up to the hype.

OK, so you're going to charge me approximately $100 per person for dinner, plus tip, and you need to squeeze out another $2 in profit by avoiding credit cards?

That kind of arrogance just ... ... I don't know if I'm more amused than annoyed.

Really, these kinds of places are designed and (it seems) largely attended by sales folks on an expense account, or tourists.

We (the wifey and I) went to a similar place at a resort-type town (too embarrassed to list the name) in July, for our anniversary, also coincidentally as part of a conference, so I expensed it. My boss called me later:

"Who else did you take to dinner?"

"Just me and the wife."

"For $240?"

"Yes"

"I hope it was good."

LOL.

One of my sides was asparagus. They were nice asparagus, well prepared, with a little sauce dribbled on, very fresh, and if I recall correctly, there were 6 stalks, for $18. That's $3 per stalk. It cracks me up. They could have been a bit warmer though...
