They're both great - love the moonphase. But the 5711, like the Sub Date seems like a "classic". Also, I've seen lots of 5712 in shops here in London...yet to see a 5711. AD's have told me they don't even put them in the window - just straight to customers.

^might be that ten grand extra make the moonphase less desired :-)

5711 for the clean blue dial
5712 for the 240 micro rotor movement

The minute and hour hands of the 5712 have a unique calming effect amongst the dial layout.
The 5711 with the center second hand, can never duplicate the same effect, nice as it is. They should have released it without the second hand. Maybe next year they will. My 5711 begs and pleads for wrist time, but the 5712 won't relinquish its dominate place as #1! |

Tough but no wrong choice here.
Personally, i prefer the classic 5711. The root of all nautiluses. |

Also a minor point that probably nobody cares about but the 5711 has 120m as water resistance whilst the 5712 has 60m. for a watch called "nautilus" I would expect to be able to swim with it. For complications I would not get a nautilus, I think the 5711 is the ultimate "beater"!!

I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever that it is a fine watch, in fact every Patek is a very fine watch! just saying that the 5711 is more "swimmable" than the 5712, thats my only point really. it all depends on what the OPs priorities are!

I loved reading this whole thread and seeing the differences of opinion. I was going to say Black and White opinions but perhaps.. it is a shade of blue.. Seriously though with my ADD-- I prefer the asymmetry but not what i would call unbalanced look to the 5712-- I like complications in general.. Not to say the 5711 is not nice but I would take the 5712 over the 5711.

I originally wrote off the 5711 and 5712 as my grails because all of my local Patek ADs basically told me I'd never get one due to demand, but now I'm considering it again in hopes that I might be able to find a dealer willing to sell one to someone who hasn't bought Pateks before. I'm having the same dilemma choosing between them (and between either of them and the watches I'd sell to fund the acquisition). The clean, iconic 5711 that highlights the gorgeous blue dial, or the complicated 5712 with micro-rotor for only a bit more money. Tough call! Good luck to you with your choice and with finding one!

Having already a 5712 would it be totally ridiculous to also get 5711 blue dial to add to the collection? Does anyone have both and like having two similar but uniquely elegant pieces? Have to make a quick decision is my AD just called with an option to pick up a 5711.

You would be less confused if choosing between a 5712 and. 5726 both with bracelet.... Closer to apples and apples instead of apples and oranges

Agreed! Write off your "grail" because it will take eight months for a routine service! Ask me how I know. Then ask me why the flick I bought a more complicated model in the Nautilus line... |

Depends what already have , if only going have one steel sports patek then can't beat the 5711. If own others like 5167 then I would go for 5712. You get stunning blue dial and interesting micro rotor movement to look at . I would not base my choice on what was easier to get though , if Grail watch it's worth the wait

Of course 5712, it's the same watch but with complications, if you like the dial display get it you will love it, I love mine, it's a great watch, or a 5726 is also really cool, annual calendar and moon phase in a "sports" watch, very cool IMO

Definitely my all time favorite also, I love my 5726 on strap but the 5712 will always be my favorite of the 2, even if I just got the 5726 2 months ago, it's a great watch, like a 5711 with nice complications, love the moon phase and the PR is always useful if you have more than one watch and don't want to reset the date and moon phase, you just wind it up when it's close to zero, to the max and it's ok, it's not indispensable but very useful and would like to have one on the 5726
