You have to ask youself, "How much is a clean conscience worth"? Then make an offer.

Definitely! That is why i want to know what the value of this watch is... i really have no idea. This is the first time I am looking at vintage sub. I remember coming across a posting on the double red sea dweller, which was like 35-45k. However, I don't think this is in the same range at all.

I think Moviefreak is in the ball park. Depends on box and papers and service records. If you should decide not to make an offer would you be so kind as to let us know so that we could take a swing at it. It looks reallllll nice !

I hope you can get it, and at a good price, because that is one beautiful watch man. Good luck.

Definitel! I would PM any one who is interested on this watch... if i don't end up getting it.
The only problem is, there is no box or paper... not even sure if its authentic.
I feel that it looks too clean and suspect the bracelete has been changed. However, I could be wrong. That is why i am posting these pics to show.
Any thoughts?

Be careful. I have read that a large percent of any "Red" Rolex are fakes.

Since you are new to this like you said what attracted you to this watch in the 1st place. If your heart is set on a vintage red sub I would buy from a reputable dealer in VINTAGE ROLEX Even if you go this route I would spend some time reading and learning how to tell a fake dial from a real dial.It is probably 1 of the most faked dials out there. Does anybody like this dial? Since this is always a sensitive area and everybody has an opinion I will say I dont like the watch.

I'll confess to having a question myself. One thing is the serial number to dial combination.

That number places it in the 1971ish range yet the closed 6 dial indicates a latter timeframe (73-74ish).

The question as to what a Vintage watch is worth is different for everyone.Besides fake parts another problem that doesn't get talked about enough is a damaged doctored up watches. Striped cases made to fit. Worn out, striped, water damaged, pitted movements etc. Do you have any idea how many guys tell watchmakers just get it too run I am selling it. I dont want to put any money in it etc ?Everything is worth something determining this is a process.I have a checklist and process I use to determine what its worth to me. This is just for starters. Go over every aspect of the watch and grade it/price it.
1.Case &Case Back
2.Bracelet & Clasp & End Pieces
3.Movement
4.Bezel and Insert,
5.Dial, hands and Date wheel
6.Crown or Pushers
7.Crystal
8.Box, Papers and any other extras*

I was thinking the same thing after reading thru Double Red Seadewller site. I was hoping that someone from this forum may have the exact watch from the same year, and see tell me if this was the authentic.
I was told that this watch should be from 1975.
Thanks everyone for all the input so far...

I posted a mini checklist above. I would advise starting there. You asked what a vintage watch was worth. People have a tendency to throw numbers around without even looking over the whole watch in question. I have seen on other forums the same question asked with minimal pics and a few so called experts chimed in with numbers. The person bought based on this only to find out the watch was all wrong. Having said that everybody wants to help and offer advise. At the end of the day you determine what its worth to you.Everything is worth something.Even damaged watches.
Here is the dial you posted. A 2811xxx would have open 6 dial. Here is a pic of correct dial for that serial number range. From a 288xxx watch
You have posted no pictures of the case, movement, bracelet etc that are all relevant. Judging by the case back and dial are you sure of the serial numbers? Most all 1970-71 case backs I have handled are stamped with year.Latter 1680 like the kind that dial belongs too don't have the year in the case back.

Nikos... i really appreciate your input.
However, I don't know how each of those items, in your list, are suppose to worth in a vintage watch. Plus, I can't find a picture of this red sub from the same year to compare.
That is why I have posted this watch here to see if anyone can see faults in it or anything suspicious.
Most important, a value range.
Thanks again...

This is absolutely the wronge dial for the serial number stated. This dial with closed 6's and "S" in Submariner represents the last of series of red sub dials made. These dials show up in the 5M serial# and above. Nice dial, and looks original, but a replacement for the original dial style in the 2-3M serial# range. Do some research in this forum, you will find good pictures of the proper dials per serial# vintage.

It would not be a fake if all the parts are original, even if the dial is incorrect.. but I do not know how you can tell if the dial was always red or refinished with red color..
