Glad you made a bit of money. The only problem that i can see with your model is that its not scalable.

For most people itsa working capital game. So more working capital available the bigger scale.

But sounded you had fun and you didnt lose money!

Great read.

Very interesting that you do it for the “rush” kind of.

I bet it’s hard to keep your mouth shut when an AD is laughing in your face about a model that you will “never” be able to find, and you’ve found many already haha

I repeat, good read

Spot on; not at all scalable in the way that I've done it. In fact, it's only profitable for me because the travel was subsidized.

Anybody thinking of trying to make a living out of this would need to approach it so much differently.

Indeed; very much about the rush. Funny what provides a rush as we get older. :)

I have lost track of how many ADs I've visited this year but I've seen and heard some funny stuff. It is very often an entertaining game.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting to read. Ignore the naysayers, they dream to have the connections and access to pieces that you’ve acquired but don’t want to show it.

This was a really interesting read, and I very much enjoyed it.

A lot of what you wrote applies to how I see my business, so it made perfect logical sense to me - but I have just never seen my hobbies & other interests in that way...perhaps I should!

Are you getting better bundled deals if paying cash at AD?

Considering the precconcieved notion of flippers. I am surprised.

Just an observation

Ok I’ll bite. I don’t see the point in all this. Lots of work and capital outlay for what you admit is a modest profit. What’s the point of acquiring 37 hard-to-get stainless models if you’re only going to turn around and sell them immediately?

I love my Daytona and I’ll be the first to admit a big part of that is the excusivity. But I actually have the watch and wear it. Flipping it would have given me a bit of cash but I’d have no satisfaction from having a relatively rare and desirable item. You say you’re motivated by getting what you’re told you can’t have... but you just get rid of them as soon as you get them, and you must given the way you’re doing this by bundling less desirable pieces. Seems like the ADs are getting the last laugh.

This is a forum for people who love watches. Is that you? Seems like you’ve just discovered a way to scratch out a few bucks on the side that happens to involve buying and selling watches. Could just as easily be any other widget as far as you’d care.

It’s not exactly new information but your delivery was somewhat entertaining. As far as I’m concerned keep doing it if you enjoy it

I've found that there is nearly never a discount for offering to pay cash but...

BIG but...

If an AD is genuinely suspicious of you being a dirty rotten flipper, they will alert that certain models not on display are for sale "cash only."

I aim to pay with my AMEX each time but have also earmarked funds for emergency "cash only" purchases.

Agreed; I expected more backlash and was accepting of the fact that it would come.

I will say that I do find it slightly interesting that this thread was moved here (from the Rolex/Tudor discussion forum). There is an ad nauseam flow of "Greys/Flippers Are Ruining The Market" threads/posts there, daily, and they are never moved here. I actually believe that this is the right home for this thread but given that the flip sides of this thread always sit over there is a little odd. If this one belongs here, then any on the subject also do too. I guess the "complaining" goes there and the "explaining" goes here.

Thank you. I do enjoy it...though as noted earlier, the George Costanza-esque masquerade that goes on in order to get some of the watches is what ultimately kills much of the joy.

I don't mean to get all philosophical here, and certainly mean no disrespect but I don't get any satisfaction from "having a relatively rare and desirable item." Actually, what all of the processes prior to this have taught me, and this only reminded me, is that that actual "thing" that any of us are seeking isn't where any of the satisfaction is. I like the hunt and the kill and the newness; after that, it's just a watch/"other widget."

It's a real first-world problem; once you repeatedly land what before was some vague materialistic, consumer's dream, the excitement of the "have" is long, long gone, with the memory of the "chase" and "kill" all that really remains. An old buddy in the surfing world used to say (and I think he was paraphrasing someone else...I don't know) about big swells, "better than the moment itself, better than the memory, the last moment of anticipation.")

It's not much different than a nice pair of shoes, really. I sort of like looking for them and from all of the noise reducing it all to a signal that makes sense to/for me. The moment that I purchase those shoes, and have them in hand, I'm thrilled, largely in anticipation of wearing new shoes (I don't wear new shoes out of the store...ever....for this very reason). There is something undeniably and maybe universally appealing about new shoes. And, sure, while there's a great comfort and familiarity with well-worn shoes (especially leather!), nothing compares to the feeling, the smell, the knowledge, of new.

I always have new watches. Oh, and sometimes I even get to wear them for awhile.

How many new satainless Daytona’s did you grab out of 40 “hard” SS pieces?

For every desireable piece you ended up with two less desirable ones. How did you flip the other two without taking too much of a hit?
