Why do we like stainless steel, Is it cooler, more rugged, less blingy,

When I got my sub in 92 it kinda looked cool, and it was the only one I could afford

I prefer white metals and SS is a hell of a lot cheaper than WG and PT.

Its just a much more practical metal to use in a watch. Durable, cheap to fix/replace, easy to work with.

SS doesn't rust (unless your store your watch on a carbon steel work bench), it can be polished to a mirror like shine, it's fairly easy to work and stands up to abuse.

Yeah it does scratch but so does every metal.

I prefer SS on sharp edged items we cannot mention because it holds an edge and doesn't rust. It is one of the great advances in metallurgy, in my opinion.

And I like exotic SS's with high vanadium, etc.

depends on the purpose ; for rough activity SS, for more office/dress situations PM....every variety has its place depending on your wearing habits.

I love my SS for the simple fact that i can endure my life, scratches and all. So far so good. The PM stuff is nice for special events and evening occasions.

I think the PM versions of the professional line look great. I'd love a YG sub with blue dial as a retirement piece someday. But as for right now, I don't think any of the PM pieces in the professional line would hold up as well to the abuse I put my watches through as my SS Sub.

I'm saving the PM for other pieces like my TT Datejust for now.

Stainless steel obviously is more affordable. It also is the most practical if we use watches as instruments. If we are being honest, all Rolex watches are luxuries so it's hard to say that gold is reserved for this desire. I think at the end of the day, I view steel as the standard from which other cases are built upon. When I am able to, I will certainly add precious metal as it has an obvious aesthetic advantage.

Sure it does, I don't particularly like dress watches with leather straps on traditional hook lugs but I do like the colour, heft and feel of PM so sports PMs are the obvious choice for me and many here, just as if I had to buy a dress watch for certain occasions I would be inclined to an SS one to keep the price down.

Stainless steel is a hard metal.
Not sure how I manage to scratch it.
Gold is naturally soft, is nowhere near as durable but is very elegant.
