New Member and 1st Rolex GMT Master 1675

First post. I recently acquired a GMT Master. It is my first Rolex. Have been lurking around on this site for a while and trying to learn as much as I can. I am more of a firearms collector, but I have a few watches and always wanted a higher end watch like a Rolex or Breitling. I purchased it from the second owner who purchased it from the daughter of the original owner. She said her dad brought it back from when he was in Viet Nam. The watch is currently with a trusted local watchmaker for inspection and comments. He has been servicing watches in my area for 25 plus years and has attended Rolex training. The watch came with the original paperwork. Receipt appears to be from a PX in Okinawa dated in early ‘65. The band is stamped 4 64 so that makes sense. Normal wear from what I can tell. I will be anxious to hear if my watch guy can identify anything that may have been replaced. Lum appears to be consistent on dial face and hands and no longer glows. Assuming everything checks out, I would like to find a correct period box. The gentleman I purchased it from said the Rolex box that was with it is not the original, just one he had acquired. I will post pictures when I get it back in my possession. Not sure how many posts I need before I can post pictures.

Congrats on your purchase. Not much we can say without photos. Could be all original, or full of replacement parts. If you post some photos, we will tell you right away. You can post photos right now if they are sized correctly.

Welcome to TRF. The 1675 is a prized reference; I'm still kicking myself for selling mine.

You can post pictures as attachments (.jpg less than 293 kilobytes) without a minimum number of posts. Posting links does require a minimum number of posts.

When you reply to a thread (not quick reply) there is an "Additional Options" window below the "Reply to Thread" window. In the Additional Options window, click "Manage Attachments" in the "Attach Files" window.

This is an example of a 120 kilobyte attached file.

Assume you will have late gilt dial 1675 if paper stated year 1964. Can’t wait to see it especially with original owner provenance.

Keep us posted please

Thanks for the comments. I am kicking myself for not taking pictures first, but I was anxious to get it to the watchmaker for an inspection. Should have it back in 1-2 weeks.

I forgot to mention. I was doing some research on the bands. It has the 7206 band with the rivets on the side. Will the original paperwork say what band it had on it when it left the Rolex factory? Is that band more desirable?

Could someone be so kind as to posting a picture of a correct period box?

Thanks in advance.

Swiss made 7206 is correct and end link should be marked 80? Show us when you got it back. I am excited to see it. Sound like you have nice one with you.

It's a perfectly good bracelet, and typical for the reference. As to whether it is written on the paperwork, why don't you look and tell us. Or post photos. Please don't tell us you gave the papers to your watchmaker.

Ok...got the paperwork from my watchmaker. He has just started cleaning so I did not get pictures of the watch. He assured me everything looked good. Said it showed one service date scratched inside the backplate dating back to ‘89. He said watch serial number matched the paperwork. Notice the serial number on the original receipt also matches. Wow...$140 new!! The receipt stamp says “Ryukyus Exchange Branch 19”. Let me know your thoughts. Pictures of watch coming in a few days.

Service in ‘89 would have been likely to recommend a service dial and bezel insert if done by Rolex. Fingers crossed for you.

Normally the end links are 58. Some can be found with the 80 end links.

I have never seen any documentation on original paperwork indicating the band style on the GMT 1675 unless it is a very late 1970s model that has a typed warranty paper.

Great to hear all match up and can’t wait to see it. I really think that you have nicest GMT from your late father. Keep us posted again

Two more posts and you can post links to images hosted elsewhere. Actually, you're even allowed to participate in other threads as well, since you're a forum member now.

I'm posting Carbineman's pictures. I had to resize them and rotate some to get them small enough to attach, but I think the important details are legible.

The paperwork is always a nice bonus. Way more important than the box.

Of course, what we really want to see is the watch.
