Just thought I'd share my thoughts on the SKX009j and why its one of my favorites. I've had this watch now for about year and a half and I can honestly say it makes me smile whenever I strap it on, (which is quite often).

At roughly 42mm it wears deceptively well for its size and has a wondeful mix of curves and angles with polished and brushed surfaces on the case.

The jubilee bracelet is rattley with tons of stretch, yet is super comfortable and has a charming feel on the wrist.

The movement is a 7S26 non hacking, no manual wind. All you need to do to bring it to life is shake it and go. Truly hassle free, with bullet proof reliability.

The day-date complication takes its sweet time to turn over. Hours to complete the change. Definitely not instantaneous but the fact that it has a day date complication is a bonus at this price point to me. Besides, I'm rarely awake when the magic happens

The bezel feedback is spongy at best and yet strangely it somehow has a very satisfying feel.

The bezel is aluminum and the crystal is hardlex. Hardly the most modern materials used here but they are suitable for the throwback vibe of this watch IMO.

The stamped clasp has an old school feel, lightweight and very comfortable. Definately juxtaposed to the Rolex glidelock, but in a good way.

Last, the dial... why do I love this dial so much? No lume surrounds, the needle 6 and 9, the touch of orange (my least favorite color. Yet it works here), and the blue base color that looks black most of the time is subtle cool.

The crown is utterly awful to operate but even that makes me smile

Looks good to me Brian. I've got a 007 now on a rattley jubilee, I go back and forth to the oyster so I know where your coming from. A must have for sure...

I wear my SKX009J1 pretty much daily and it's the perfect beater. The only differences I can see I have with you Brian as that my crown operates very well, but my bezel is too stiff for my liking and doesn't give good grip.

It really is a great do all kind of watch.

I used dental floss on my crown when I first got it, and it did help to make it operate a bit smoother. It’s seating it that is the main issue for me.

Great write up, Brian! I remember my first skx and was shocked how much I loved it. Plus this reference is the perfect platform for mods limited only by your imagination. It reminds me of the 60's & 70's VW's I owned that were austere in luxury accoutrements but would never fail to start in -25 degrees winter temps.

Be they OEM or modded to personal tastes, an skx [or two] is a must for any collector.

Love my two SKX009s. I have them both in "modded" form at the moment but sometimes I switch back to the original Pepsi like yours Brian.
Love these watches - they give me no less joy than my Rolex watches.

The SKX is the epitome of modern Seiko divers, IMO. When people ask "which Seiko diver should I get first," my first thought is to point them in the direction of the SKX (even though it is no longer being produced). Just an undisputed classic.

Timely thread , I’ve got a 07 & 09 because I like them that much & given the cost they are literally a steal . I know they aren’t produced anymore ,but they are still plenty out there available to buy new . While the stock jubilee seems cheap and rattly it really is fit for purpose and very comfortable, I felt the 07 deserved something a more befitting. So I bought a Uncle Seiko President bracelet two weeks ago and it really lifts the watch for me . The SKX really is a watch that deserves to be in any collection ,and as Dan has noted its Modders gold

The SKX is what started it for me. I still remember buying my first one at Service Merchandise department store in the late 90's. Throughout my 20's and into my 30's it was always on my wrist. Even after aquiring multiple swiss time pieces I still own a couple which both still get plenty of wrist time. I will always appreciate it's simplicity and reliability. I think it is the watch that got many of us into watches in the first place and is proof that a watch does not have to be expensive to be great.

Such an accurate description of the SKX experience by someone who loves it, despite its shortcomings.

I wear mine every day, at some point. My 009 has made me question several watch choices and the money spent. The enjoyment I get from this, dollar for dollar hits way above the others I own.

Great post, Brian! It was your excitement around the SKX when you originally got it that eventually influenced me to pick up a 007. I absolutely love it. I wear it exclusively on the rattly Seiko jubilee and wouldn’t have it any other way. It brings me as much joy as wearing my 124060, which is interesting considering the price disparity.

I have the 009 and love it. It's one of my favorite watches, despite the movement being kinda crappy - mine won't hold the power reserve overnight sometimes.

The SKX009 is and will be one of my favourite watches for life. I bought a 009 when I was 16 years old and wore it every day on the OEM jubilee, switching to NATOs for the winter months and a nice rubber dive strap for the summer. It has been with me in oceans, lakes, ponds, pools, hot tubs around the world. You cannot go wrong with buying one of these watches for their value. The lume is incredible, I've used it as a night stand clock so many times in hotels, cottages and camping. Very accurate too.

Such a great daily wearer! You won't ever hear a bad think about Seiko through me. Mine has been through a lot in the past decade and it still looks so pretty!

I just got done wearing my 007 for a couple weeks. It’s just such a great watch. Whenever I see someone wearing one in the wild I know that they just “get it”. A few years ago The former ceo of my company had one and I complimented him on it, and he beamed up and said, “I’ve had this watch for 17 years, never been serviced and doesn’t lose more than a minute per month”. It was such a cool moment for me. This guy can afford pretty much anything, and chooses to wear a $250 watch. I don’t know if he’s a watch guy per se’ but he sure didn’t say a damn word about my Rolex seadweller I was wearing.

The SKX009 was my very first mechanical watch. I wore it every day from 2006-2009, including over a year in Iraq, which probably caused the pretty awesome bezel fading.

I’ve always had a penchant for the Pepsi bezels, I guess, which may be why I pined over the BLRO for so long!!!
