Platinum DayDate Discussion and Owners Thread

I was looking hard on the forum and couldn’t find a thread which was dedicated to discussing the variations, history and absolute downright awesomeness of the platinum DayDate.

There is one for the Platona, so I thought I’d start one. I hope I’m not in contravention of any rules!

So I encourage people to share photos, comments and add people on the forum who are known to be in the club. But I’m also hoping this isn’t an exclusive thread, anyone is welcome to comment discuss and enjoy!!

I’m new to owning this incredible watch, I feel incredibly fortunate and I just can’t get enough, I haven’t taken it off since I bought it!

All the very best, and I hope this takes off!!

Congrats, that’s a beauty!

A PT DD is definitely a grail piece would like to own one day; in the meantime my 118209 will have to hold me over

I saw you post that picture on another thread, I think that’s the most beautiful WG combo I’ve seen. Congrats.

Never seen white gold with a smooth bezel, obviously these were made at some point then?

Yes, Rolex did the 118209 model when they started the 6 series DD back in 2000, which came “standard” with the oyster bracelet and optionally on the president bracelet from its flutted bezel sibling (118239).

Read that Rolex later decided to discontinue the 118209 model as had too much resemblance to the platinum version (118206) when matched with the president bracelet. Am not clear when the production stopped, but there are versions with and without engraved rehaut and the heavier clasp.

Mine is an early production as it is a P serial with older style / lighter clasp and no engraved rehaut; looks like it was a safe queen as it still has the green caseback sticker after 20 years!

Platinum DD40s are nice - when I was going to buy one and eventually tried one on I just could not get over the smooth bezel.

To me a DD needs a fluted bezel plus I lean towards colored gold over WG or Platinum.

To me a YG DD40 or RG DD40 are the perfect watches.

I would buy the platinum if one day they put a fluted bezel on it.

This is my 36mm. Proportions and weight are just spot on.

The one that really does it for me is the Ice Blue Quadrant Motif dial, blue hands, and blue deconstructed Romans. This one for me is just WOW!! If I am ever in the (financial) position to buy this piece, I am definitely going to be an owner! Pic is from C24 and not mine (unfortunately).

This is the pic my AD sent me when my watch landed this past May. Always my first choice when digging in my watch box.

I have the Day Date II with the blue wave dial and absolutely love it. I prefer the darker blue dial paired with the smooth bezel. The weight is awesome. It feels amazing.

The reason they don’t have a fluted bezel is because (I understand) they can’t machine platinum effectively to that level of quality.

So it’s wasn’t actually a design decision originally, but there out of necessity…

I’m prepared to be corrected of course!!

I have owned the 36mm twice and a white gold smooth bezel once. I really miss it. It’s just a great watch where if you you you know and if not flies under the radar in a great way.

Yes, this is my favorite one, too. Just beautiful. My wedding band and other jewelry is platinum and it would be a perfect complement.

I welcome and like the smooth bezel. I have many fluted bezel watches and this is a perfect change of pace.

I'd love to add a 36mm Pt DD to my collection, it's areal shame they discontinued it.

I always wanted a motif dial. The watch makes all of my other pm and tt watches feel really bleh… like I do not reach for them anymore. I can see this and my DaytonaC becoming my two watch lifers. Only two I need really. Maybe the op yellow has a slot too as part of a trio.
