Do AP boutiques have to collect tax on out of state sales?

Sorry if this is the wrong sub-forum for this but I figured most people who have bought from an AP boutique would be on here. I got the call for a 15500 I have been waiting for, for a few months. While I am very excited to finally have it sent out to me from the AP boutique, I have been informed that they have to collect sales tax on it even though it is an out of state sale. My experience thus far with ADs has been no tax if they are shipping out of state. Has this recently changed?

The only way to avoid sales tax is by shipping to a state that has no sales tax. So unless you live in one of those few states (Delaware, Oregon, and a couple others...), expect to pay sales tax. Unfortunately there is no other way around this anymore. Any out of state purchase could be mailed back home to avoid sales tax until some time last year when Trump cracked down on those laws.

Tax laws have changed. Only small retailers now can can ship out of state without tax. Sorry bud, yea its a dick punch I know paying that extra $1200. I just figure the watch is really 20,400 and call it a day.

the supreme court cracked down on it... or at least gave the states a way to ensure taxes get collected to where the item is being shipped to

taxes were always due. people just chose to ignore it. now they cant

Makes equal sense. I knew someone cracked down on it from the federal government and from what I’ve heard it was Trump (admittedly through the grapevine). Frankly I try to stay out of the political arena as much as possible to be honest so pardon my mistake.

Either way, sales tax should be assumed now-a-days OP!

its not really political. the case is wayfair vs south dakota.

Basically south dakota passed a law that said out of state sellers had to collect sales tax for goods shipped to south dakota. Some didn't, and south dakota took it to court. they won

Look on your state income tax return. There is a line typically for amount of merchandise subject to local sales tax you purchased that you didn’t pay sales tax on. You then calculate the sales tax using your states % and it gets put on the tax return as additional tax owed. If it’s not there then there is a separate sales/use tax return to be filed.

Most people ignore this aspect of state income taxation.

That’s the old way that people were supposed to pay these taxes. Now most retailers are collecting the out-of-state sales tax.

Thank you all for the responses. Pardon my ignorance on those matters as I have only been in the US for a very short time.

Since you mention getting a 15202, may I ask you how many purchases it took to be considered for that?
Would love to talk to my SA about it but unsure if 1 15500 is enough for that

I wonder if getting a P O Box in a tax free state would work?

I was informed by AP that they (1) cannot ship to a business address, which most PO Boxes tend to be; and (2) it has to be your billing address. As such, limited to no real way to avoid sales tax.

Wouldn't the billing address for the credit card also need to be from one of those sales tax free states. I suppose you could perhaps write a check...

So I’ve heard. Oh well was fun while it lasted. As long as everyone plays by the same rules I don’t care.
