Las Vegas maid stole $768,000 in jewelry from hotel room, police say

Wow. Hope it wasn't anyone here.

Rolex, Cartier and Audemars Piguet watches went missing from a room the housekeeper was assigned at Vdara hotel

A housekeeper for a Las Vegas hotel was charged for allegedly stealing more than $750,000 worth of jewelry from a room last month, including designer watches, bracelets and necklaces, according to police and court files obtained by The Washington Post.

Might be paywalled but this is supposed to be a "gift story" link. The occupant is probably not a fan of the "stealth wealth" trend. :D

Perhaps could be considered a tip?

I still think tipping is getting our of hand.

I only take 1 watch with me on trips so that I dont need to leave anything valuable at the hotel. Way less stressful :)

value estimate sounds inflated?

agree, 1 watch for travel... a relatively cheap one at that, water proof with a date.

Depends on the pieces. Rainbow Daytona, an open worked frosted gold Royal Oak with gemset bezel, and a Van Cleef and Arpels bracelet for the wife and you could be right there.

It’s Vegas; lots of people take their most expensive pieces with them to show off since it’s generally a very safe place (inside Strip casinos). Obviously in this case not so much lol.

And agree 100% on the hotel safe thing; not much of a lock box. Best place for a watch is on your wrist

I know, right?

Someone stole my sunglasses at a cookout over the weekend. This gives me a little perspective.

I know someone who had an heirloom watch stolen from their room in Vegas while they were sleeping.

The guy I know was drunk and was followed to his room. As his door was closing, the thief slipped something in front of the latch so that the door would not lock. Came back an hour later, walked in and took the watch off the dresser.

Man that’s where I stay when in town for work. Generally a great place….sans thieving house keepers…..and the fact that the gyms hours are from 8-5/6

From the article: "Investigators also unearthed a recording of a collect phone call to Melendez from Clark County Detention Center in which she describes the stolen items to an apparent romantic partner in the prison, detailing her plan to take them from a room she was assigned to clean." Do people really not know that phone calls from jails/prisons are recorded?

And the victims said that they had hidden over $700,000 worth of stuff in a computer bag! Why didn't they use the room safe? Yeah, room safes aren't necessarily the most secure, but better than a computer bag!

And another reason to wear your watch while sleeping

That’s a nutty amount. Jeez

I wonder if this individual was perhaps a dealer and had carried inventory with him? As to casually carry almost a million in jewelry on a vacation is billionaire status and likely have personal security who’d be looking after this stuff anyhow.
