Nautilus tool watch, must see!

Picture is worth a thousand words...
A friend was wearing this.

Handed down from his father, he shared with me,
"I wear it every day, I chop wood wearing it"

I just love it.
He also shared that he has the movement and seals serviced regularly and it has never given him anything but reliable service.

I would have loved to borrow it for an extensive photo shoot, but he wasn't parting with it for more than a moment for me to snap the above w my iPhone.

That's how to really enjoy a watch!! I wish I could wear my 5980 in the same manner, but I just couldn't live with the scratches.

Remembering the good old days where you bought a watch and wore it.

My first "good" watch did not leave my wrist for 12 years when the seconmd bracelet broke and it died...

Anyway, I think it is great to see a watch with some honest wear on it.

Cheers to him!

And not too long ago we had a thread with folks expressing concerns about playing golf while wearing a Patek.... I guess this answers it.

I can't say I share all the same sentiments as everyone else.

Too bad he didn't take better care of the case...

if we wear the watch everyday for all of our day, the case will look like this, it is ineveitable.

to that end, what a story it tells

i think it is especially remarkable that in all the trips the watch has made to service, it has escaped the polishing of the case… this fact i absolutely love.

the patina of the dial is also just so beautiful to me!

I wear watches pretty much everyday. None of the watches I value will EVER end up looking like that. The value of that watch at this point is purely sentimental because of how it was treated. To me that is unfortunate, because there is one less of these in the world in collectible condition.

As far as polishing, what would be the point of polishing a case that damaged? There wouldn't be any case left!

Anyway, I'm happy that he has a sentimental memento of his father, but very very sad for the watch...

I must agree that it's sad for the watch, for sports or things of the sort I always wear a Rolex, they are tanks and in case of some serious scratches you can polish it there's enough metal on it, whereas on a Nautilus, especially 5711 and 5712, it's so thin that polishing it would take off half the metal on it.

In fairness the bulk of the wear may have been from his father before he received it? The case appears to have fine scratches covering it but I don't see any severe dings or dents. The bracelet fit surprisingly tight and just as a new model, it would not be uncommon for the bezel to be replaced if need, all in all I would think the watch could be brought back to fine condition If owner requested at service.

The submariner I wore for 20 years day in day out looked quite similar with the exception the sub bracelet was ready for the scrap heap in the end, whereas the Patek bracelet actually, to me, seemed to hold up far better.

I am curious what Patek can do regarding older case parts, we know they will always replace mechanical parts that are needed, I wonder if they also would have a supply or original manufacturing process remaining for things like a vintage bezel?

If Patek has NOS bezels, that would be great. I would imagine if this piece could be restored to period correct and excellent condition that it would be worth quite a bit. That dial may be worth quite a bit alone.

This should once and for all answer the question of whether the Nautilus can be used as an everyday wear. It absolutely can. From now on when somebody asks this question, they need to see this thread. Great watch and lovely to see

WOW great story but I won't soon be chopping wood with my 5712 on me, 1 month in Thailand and my BLNR came back with some serious scratches on the bracelet , and to think I was hesitating to take the Patek or not, so glad I didn't take it

I bet his axe is in the trunk of his beat-up Rolls Royce with the dents and the different colored body panels...and sheepskin covers on his torn-up upholstery...
