Ok it's time for a new watch

So it's this time of the year where the itch starts. My choices have come down to these two:

AP Perpetual in Steel/Blue
PP 5990A

The perpetual calendar is quite impressive but I do have the 15400 in steel/blue. No Pateks in my collection at all.

Been trying so hard to get the AP ceramic perpetual with no luck. Best I got is 2019.

I love the AP PC and it was my favorite PC ever... and then Patek released the 5740G. So if i wanted a PC the Nautilus is the top of my list. Ive seen it in person and its awesome.

So allowing for a third option and if price was not a consideration i would rank them
1. 5740G
2. 5990
3. AP RO PC

I would still want a 5990 though even if i got the 5740 as its that nice.

Oh, when I said collection - it's pretty much the blue 15400st. Sold off all AP's (44Ti, 44CE, CE Diver and 15407) for different reasons. Need to start from scratch now.

The only issue is that it's overpriced for the complications. Chrono is also limited to minutes which is pretty much useless for me. Beautiful watch nonetheless.

Do you think they will ever release a blue one?

It's not really overpriced when you figure at retail its around 20K more than a 5711 and it has a chronograph and a travel time complication. Its a better value than most of the nautilus watches.

I like the 60 minute chrono as im not timing long events and its cleaner. If you are regularly in need of timing something in 12 hour increments, then yeah its not ideal

I use the chronograph on my pieces regularly and I've never had the need to time more than 60 minutes. In fact, I like having a 60 minute counter unlike a 30 minute counter on many watches. I'll take the cleaner dial over the roulette wheel look of the 5980.

I think the 5990 is the best value in the Nautilus line-up right now. When you compare it to the 5712 which only has the PR and Moonphase, it's only about $13,300 in MSRP more for both a travel time and chronograph function. And if you compare the grey market prices, the 5990 basically is the same price as the 11/12. To me it's a no brainer if you're in the market for a Nautilus. And even if you compare apples to apples grey prices, the premium on the 5990 is smaller than those two.

No, I meant that would be my order of preference, not that I'd get all three. That should have been pretty clear.

I’d wait and evaluate. Sounds like they are all compromises. If you must get the ce perp at retail I’d wait it out. Ever since AP announced the RD2 the blue SS perpetuals have started becoming more available. The ceramic may be next?

I think he was saying the 5740 is overpriced, not the 5990.
Anyways I was about to say the same, the 5740 is just amazing, leaves the 2 others far behind IMO, I was in love the minute I saw it, amazing in all aspects.

Wow you sold your CE Diver and 15407ST? Not sure I could have sold those two, the 44’s sure but these two...

I’m not sure about the Patek, I think it depends on your wrist size. If you’ve got a 7.25” wrist size or above then Pateks are too small. I have a 5711 on order (ordered blind) and visited a Watches of Switzerland Patek exhibition a week ago where they had the majority of the range on display. I tried on the 5711 and frankly it looked ridiculous but on smaller wrists it looks stunning. On the same day I tried on the PC and that looked really good, that would get my vote.

Why haven’t you included the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 49020 as another potential option?
Finding the blue NY boutique only version may prove difficult, but Govberg has the Deep Stream model.
Add on the bracelet, and you can change the look as and when you want or need to.

That particular Vacheron is nice and I wore it for an evening at a Vacheron dinner however the finishing is no where near on the same level as AP and the case on the edges looks like it pressed into shape rather than machined from a solid block.

Also one of the other guests recognised the signs of someone who was about to pull the trigger and advised me to look at resale value before I committed. That was enough to put my sensible head back on.

its funny because on the Patek subform its almost the opposite reaction (if you are referencing the 5990 specifically), with a lot of people saying its too big. In reality its probably somewhere in the middle. Its about the same as a sub as far as thickness and how it wears. Its thick for a patek but not thick compared to most watches. Obviously its smaller than an AP though.

That AP PC is stunning... just not sure i would buy one if i already had a blue 15400 as the OP does.

My feeling now is things won't get better, in fact probably the reverse, so I would seriously plan to go grey now on pieces that are true grail-type pieces. It is a different market now and waiting may too often turn out to be a mug's game so I don't really encourage that any more if one can afford the grey price.
