[IMG] PHOTOS RESIZE Coded

Hi Guys

I've done some custom coding to help us out with the massively oversized photos.

When guys attach an image it can be massive using the [img] [/img] code

When you use the [img] tag now the image will automatically be resized to 1100 pixels in width and the height will also be automatically proportionally adjusted.

Here is an example:

Here is a link to the original size of the image which is 1820 pixels wide
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c2a08e2c6a.jpg

Now using the [img] tag its automatically resized to 1100 pixels wide.

This has put an end to any oversized images.

No one will have to do the horizontal scroll again!!!!!

And the great thing is that this change operates retrospectively, so it applies to all photos ever posted on the forum that were too large.

So it will make all threads both pre-existing and new much more easy to read and navigate.

Oh, well I've dropped the size to 1100 pixels wide, that is a reasonable size for the average computer screen.

Is there a problem with that???

On another forum with a huge population of complainers, I resize to 800 pixels wide. 1100 seems fine to me.

I noticed yesterday this John Tenniel image would not upload without resizing.

Upon trying again today, I see the new software is not yet functioning for uploaded images (vs hosted images) ... here's the image after I resized it.

On a happy note, it is a great pleasure to have the uploading capability! Most forums do not support that convenience!

Still problem. Just click at the link and right click at the pic and you will get it in correct size.

this is absolutely fantastic news. thanks Steve for your efforts here. it was never going to be possible to address this issue on the user side as most people were oblivious to the annoyance they were creating with huge images. the forum will be a much better place without the crazy sized photos!!

Steve, is there any way to avoid scaling-up small images?
I always re-size my images (reduce resolution) to ensure they display at a sensible size on the screen but now they are being massively stretched to match the width of the page, losing clarity in the process.
Sorry to be 'negative' when you have been trying to fix a problem.

Another thought:
I have noticed on other Forums that when images are wrapped in 'quote' tags, they display small enough to be seen in a single screen without needing to scroll, regardless of how big they are.
Could this be another solution?

Obviously if a photo is posted with portrait rather than landscape orientation, you may still have to scroll down (but not across) to see the full image. But I think landscape is the predominant orientation and it is the orientation of monitors, laptops and tablets (by and large).

The main objective is to provide an easier and more convenient viewing interface. There is no perfect outcome here, and it comes back to a shared responsibility, that members will have to crop and resize some of their images before posting because the forum software cannot do all the work for images of all shapes and sizes.

The images are fixed at 1050 pixels irrespective of size (small or larger) so as to achieve consistency of sizing.

Some people post small photos and some people post large photos, and complaints go both ways. There is only one way to achieve consistency and that is have a standard width of 1050 pixels. So now everyone knows everyone can adjust their photos to match.

Yes, you are right about the predominance of Landscape orientation.
The 'long' images are those of 'long' things like bottles of wine etc.
I hadn't realised that many Members post images without 'sizing & scaling' them. I had always done that because of the massive resolution of modern digital pictures.
I also note that another way of posting images is to use the Forums "attach" option which posts them at the O/P's desired size/resolution.
Thanks for your efforts.

I made some additional coding modifications (entirely new revamped).
Now if an image is less than 1050 pixels in width it will not be modified, however if it is larger it will be reduced to 1050 pixels.

So if you post an image that is 800 pixels wide it will remain 800 pixels wide. So in other words there is no up-scaling of images only downscaling of images wider than 1050 pixels.

Please don't confuse the [IMG] tag (which is what this thread is all about) with the uploading of images to the forum and hosting of images by the forum. The two are very different things.

When you want the forum to host your photos then you will need to ensure your photos conform to size limits. On the other hand if you use the [IMG] tag to embed your photos, you can have whatever size photographs you like.

So if you wish to post 20mb or 5000 pixel wide photographs then use the [IMG] tag and they will automatically be downsized. On the other hand if you want the forum to host your photos reduce the photographs size to 100kb and 1050 pixels wide and then upload and insert it into your post.

The forum just doesn't have the resources or facility to host 20mb photos from everyone as you can well imagine the storage space that would occupy.

At the end of the day you have the choice so you can achieve what you desire.

Which size triggers the block on the hosted image, kb or pixels? I've been around 750 pixels on the long side and blocked. Should I force both pixels and kb to resize?

In relation to images that you upload to be hosted on this website rather than images that are hosted by another company/provider, the limit is 1100 pixels wide and long or 300kb, so both factors apply. The restriction is on pixels to ensure viewing easy and consistency without having to horizontally scroll, and secondly physical file size because the website's storage resources are finite and photo file sizes these days are huge and totally unnecessary for internet viewing purposes.
