Dj 1600

20170923_160709.jpg

Hello everyone.I have just joined this forum but have been reading on here for a couple of weeks.I am so impressed with the knowledge of the posters on here.I found this site while looking for an independent jeweler to service my datejust that I inherited from my grandfather 35 years ago.I wore it as daily for many years and had it serviced and a new band put on in the early ninety's.
The watch has 1600 on one side and 2027490 on the other.
After reading here I am leaning towards ABC Watchwerks.I have attached a couple of photos(although not good ones).I was just looking for some input
from the experts on this site.
Thanks in advance. John

beautiful watch, gorgeous dial. Make sure that they replace the crystal with a Rolex one - maybe it's the angle, but I don't like magnification on the current crystal. As you know, the band is not period correct, but I would leave it as is, as IMHO, Oyster band looks better on DJ than Jubilee.

I too like the oyster band.
Way back then you didnt have info so readily available.
Thanks again.

Beautiful job! Ready for another 50 years. :) You have a beautiful and relatively unusual dial on it, a matte black with gold print non-gilt. Many matte black DJ dials have white print and white date wheels, and some are configured as your watch is, slightly raised gold print with a champagne date wheel. This dial may have originally come on gold or two tone mainly but in those days rules weren't so restrictive as today. :)

There's no huge premium attached to it, it's not even a 'thing' but it's an extremely nice dial to have, that gold print just screams vintage. :)

It's common for sellers to call any gold print vintage Rolex dial a 'gilt' but they are not. Gilt is a process as much as a color on vintage Rolex dials. A brass dial is painted black then the lettering is actually carved through the paint to the brass plate below and then lacquered over to give a gloss appearance with lettering that is actually concave. As you might imagine, these are striking dials not to be confused with the more mundane matte dials.

This is my matte/gold dial 1968 1603, my favorite daily wear watch. It was serviced in 2015 and does exactly what you expect a Rolex to do. :) It's currently on a period jubilee.

Great on leather as well.

The gold print is difficult to catch with an iPhone so I'm showing this pic which was obviously taken with a much better camera. This is not my watch, it's just the best pic I've seen of this dial combo.

Congrats on a beautiful watch and I hope you have many happy years with it. :)

The only reason I don't own a 1600 is because I decided I wanted a day complication, but a 1600 like yours was the inspiration for my 76200. Wear it in good health.
