Which to keep? Decision time 2020 116610LN or 2020 126610LN

Evening All (from UK),

Would appreciate some seasoned insight on a dilemma I find myself in.

I have been wearing a Submariner since 2008 when the old man bought me a 16610 from an AD as a graduation present. I sold it in 2012 and seriously regretted it. Then in 2014 was fortunate to pick up a 116610 from the AD which I wore daily until 2019 when I got a bit bored and went for a Datejust 41. A month after, I regretted it big time, so picked up another new 116610 during July 2020 which came with the new style warranty card. Last of the line 40mm sub.

A fortnight ago I received an unexpected call for a 126610. Which I snapped up.

So, I now have both a last of the line 116610 and the new 126610. Both LNs.

I have been pottering around the house with each on during lock down and am struggling to decide which to keep. Financially, I am fortunate to be able to keep both (and have other watches of similar ilk), but my sensible head says to get rid of one.

Very much confused as to which to think about keeping. Not in a rush to sell either and the longer I keep them the more they will be worth.

The 116610 I like as:-
  • Has a history on my wrist since 2014;
  • Prefer the 19mm bracelet size and clasp;
  • Is more comfortable to wear;
  • Is a last of the line 116610 with the new style warranty card.

The 126610 I like as:-
  • Has a better case shape IMO that harks back to Rolexs of old;
  • Has AR coating on the inside of the crystal that makes the dial pop;
  • Sits nicer on the wrist IMO;
  • Has the new movement.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and struggled to decide which to keep. The 116610 is a special as the nostalgia I have with it and with the new style warranty card, a rare watch. I will not be able to find another new one. The 126610 has a bit of waiting list, however I would eventually be able to replace it.

The 126610 is handsome watch, but sadly the bracelet may be a little too thick, however it is growing on me. It has more wrist presence imo than the 116610 and the case and bracelet wear larger IMO.

I have 7 inch wrists so believe I can get away with either watch. Confused, tonight I'm veering towards the 126610, last night it was the 116610!

What to do!? Probably keep both! But struggling with the concept of two more or less identical watches in the collection!!

Hmmmm.

Keep both or let the 12 series go, you’ll be able to get it back again for years to come.

Umm that’s a tough one. I have a few divers before my AD call 3 days ago for a 126610 but they’re all kinda different. See sig line.

16610 to 114060 to 116613
16600 to 116600

Similar but different. So the 126610 was a easy choice for me.

If you can afford it I guess I’d keep both. You have to keep in mind that if you let one go consider

A) How long would it take to get it back
B) What would that cost be
C) How likely is it for you get another AD call for either

You say there’s things you like about both. There’s your answer. Keep em brother

If you can afford it and unless you're in a hurry I'd keep them both. Neither should loose value. It's your choice so sleep on it till you decide you need to part with one of them.

I'd go with the one you said that sits nicer on the wrist. 126610

Keep both until you're sure of your decision.

Go get the 16610LN back first.

In my family, we don't let heirloom pieces like that go. The rest are just toys.

You sound understandably conflicted. Since you are able to keep both financially, keep it until you are less conflicted. I say this because you already have a history of regrets. Decide when you have made up your mind.

One option is chuck the 116610 in a safe and not see it for a year. You know it's not going to loose its value and potentially worth more when you get it out again. After a year, you may see the 116610 in a different light and see it's the better watch for you.

Take some time to think about what you’re doing. It sounds like impulse has caused you regrets previously. Incidentally, I still have a 16610 Submariner which I bought from an AD in 2008 that will never leave my collection.

If you don’t need to sell, keep both. Justify it by making sure you wear them both.

Sounds like you've regretted previous sales so stick with both while you can afford them.

I would keep the 12 model . I have never liked the Maxi Case 11 versions .imho the 12 is just the next evolution of the Sub and is perfect

Huh?

You can afford to keep both, but you think it’s not sensible to do so, but you might try to re-purchase the one you decide to let go later down the line, and you think the 11 series you have is rare because it has the new style warranty card, oh but the longer you wait to sell the more your watch will be worth?

The old will become more of a curiosity in time, so I would keep that one. Chances are Rolex will stick to the new case for decade(s) to come . I was in a similar situation with a choice to get the new one and sell the old, but decided to hold off.

Thank you to all who contributed to this thread with their wisdom. Appreciated.

The crux of my issue was whether the watches were too similar to own two, that to the average Joe (or indeed my wife) were exactly the same watch. Again, I could not warrant it.

In the end, pottered around the house with the new one on for a couple of weeks. I liked it, but prefer the size of the bracelet (20mm) on the 116610 and honestly believe the 41mm wears larger. I have 7 inch wrists and the 41 seems larger I believe as the bracelet is wider at the lugs, however I do like the shape of the newer case.

However in the end I kept the July 2020 1166610 and as I would never have been able to buy another new one and there are many memories associated with my previous 116610. So I moved on the 126610.

In the place of the 126610, a 126613 has materialised! Great watch, the dial is mesmerising and it is now my "special occasion" watch, albeit I am pining for a GMT Rootbeer in rose gold so who knows!!

In hindsight, definitely the correct decision to keep the 116610. A special watch for me.

Thanks again all and stay safe!

I wouldn't see the new movement as a plus .

Keep both .Dont sell that last year 116610

If you kept Dad's gift you would have had a trio of :
16610
116610
126610

That would have been a nice trio .

I’m real big on how it feels on the wrist. I would just wear both alternating for a while and see if one feels more comfortable.

Keep the 12 series. Personally like the looks of 12 series and increased power reserve.

I had both in TT 40mm and 41mm plan was to keep both. But the new one just wears better and more comfortable for me. I let the 40mm go. No regrets.

Sell the 116610 and use the money to find a 16610.

The watches which were bought for me will never be sold. I also have watches which were bought for my Dad and Grandad.

Old thread, check post #17, OP sold the 126610LN and kept the 116610LN. I personally prefer the 41 but can see his reasons for sticking with the 40mm.

Sitting on the wrist nicer wins for the next decade.

don't over think in. down the road, there will be an even better sub, and then you can switch out to the newest and greatest. (No sarcasm here, mean it sincerely).

Go with the old. It’s discontinued, plus you get more $$$ for the new at this time. I had the opportunity to swap but decided not to
