If I buy a hammer to push some nails into wood, and that's the ONLY function for the hammer, it is still a tool right?! As per the dictionary definition:
"a device or implement, especially one held in the hand, used to carry out a particular function.". If a 3 hander is a tool watch, then aren't all watches, tools?! Anyway....

...I still feel in terms of watches though, a tool watch is still something bought for a function in addition to telling the time e.g. GMT, dive bezel watch, step counting watch. Personally I needed to know the timezone for at least 1 region (actually 4/5) due to work and team members.

So I opted for the Tudor Black Bay Pro:

A few reasons for my choice, which also abide to the "tool" designation of a watch:
  • Price: £3000 vs £8000~. In my toolbox I don't have the most expensive tools, nor do I have the cheapest ones. But I have the ones that strike a balance between performance and price.
  • Availability: The best ability is availability, as the saying goes. If I go into B&Q and product A isn't not the shelf, I will Google product B and if it's good enough, I'll buy!
  • Design: I was on the list for a BLNR and I don't believe the PCL or the Jubilee is a practical choice for an everyday work watch. I was also on the list for the Explorer II, but it is just as unavailable in the UK, so the Oyster bracelet on that model would just still put me at issue 2

With the BBP, I love the 39mm size too, it is just right for my 6.5" wrist. There is no mistaking that the watch is thicker than most other watches, but the case back sits well into the wrist, which gives the watch a comfortable and satisfying seating (weight and thickness wise). The T-Fit clasp is great and provides a few mm of adjustment per 5 steps. I've taken 2 links out and sit the micro adjuster at step 2-3 depending on time of day.

If I had the Black Bay Pro, Explorer II and the GMT II all in front of me to choose and no bias towards the brand name; I don't know which one I would choose, but the Tudor definitely would not be in last place; it just does the job at a good price and with similar features to the other two
Excellent choice!

Very nice but all these watches are modern jewelry. They're sold in jewelry stores, not Home Depot.

There is nothing wrong with that. Nobody should be upset by this, but I don't consider any modern Rolex, Tudor, Omega or Breitling a tool watch. They're all really nice, really cool, fun to wear, but they're just jewelry for guys with a lot of disposable income.

“when people mention the term "tool" when it came to watches I never really understood the term when it came to most watches”. A simple time piece is a tool for telling time . No mystery .

Sub a tool for divers
GMT a tool for pilots
Explorers tool for cave exploring
Milgauss a tool for radiologists
Sky-dwellers a tool for travellers
Daytonas a tool for drivers
Yacht- master a tool for boaters

Tudor Black Bay Pro a tool for all occasions.

Enjoy ! I really like mine.
