Dilemma- DD40

So here’s the deal. Back in January I placed a deposit for a DD40 with the full intent of wanting this watch. Just heard earlier this week that the watch is in. Life events happen and we are now expecting and don’t feel like it’s very reasponsible to buy the watch. How should I bring this up to the AD without souring the relationship? They have been very good to me over the last 2 years and have had little spend.

They can easily sell the watch to someone else. Takers everywhere. Question is will they return your deposit. Seems a shame for them to hold it where the watch is waitlisted. With your situation they should refund it. Good luck and big congrats.

Tell them what you told us. Ask to "downgrade" (I say that in the financial sense) to a non PM watch as a birth year for your new baby with the intent to pass down to them? First idea that popped into my head.

Have you considered selling or trading in a watch or two to lessen the blow to your wallet? Idk if it gets better than a day date to mark a significant life milestone.

Congrats!

Well, just tell the AD that you're expecting and you're still willing to have them keep the deposit to use for something of lesser value. Tell them to just get you a Steel Daytona that you can hand down to your kid. Special story that goes with the watch! =)

I would get it as long as your significant other is in agreement.
Save it to pass down to your little one as a milestone.
And if you ever need to sell for a rainy day, it will always have substantial value.

Just explain that you don’t want it anymore.
The deposit is a security for the dealer to avoid people ordering and cancelling all the time, you might loose it

Collection currently is a few sports model Rolex. Prizes being a Daytona black dial ceramic and a 41mm Sub. Sub was for wedding and love the Daytona. The DD40 is the rose gold with chocolate dial and diamond indices.

Be honest about your situation. They will understand your situation and refund your deposit.

If they want to keep your deposit, go ahead get that watch. I am sure RG D-D 40 with Chocolate dial and diamond indices can easily sell to some of us here without losing money.

Congratulation on your news and best wishes.

You don't need a good reason to cancel a watch. If you no longer wish to buy it they will sell it to someone else. Happens all the time.

I have twice left a deposit on something with my AD and subsequently cancelled the order. On both occasions I was offered a refund but chose to spend it on something else at the AD. How your AD handles it will be down to them.

Congrats on the piece.. I think you should go be honest with them and just tell them you'd still like to remain a loyal customer its just life happens and timing isn't the best... How much deposit did they make you leave? Asking because I've been considering a DD40 as my next piece and not sure how the process works.. Have ordered a couple DJ's before and it was half up front and half upon delivery....

You're a good man for not wanting to be a flipper, but if you want to keep your AD's good graces and make a little cash to help pay for diapers, I'm pretty sure this is a $44,800 watch that sells in the secondary market for $60-70k. We don't love flippers here on this site, but in your situation I think the world wouldn't judge you too harshly, since you didn't set out with the intention of reselling the watch.

Seems like you could win-win here: spend-history with your AD and probably 8-10 grand in your pocket sending it over to David SW? Lotta diapers for 8 grand...

Not saying this is what I'd do, necessarily, but I don't think it's an ethical issue per se.

I know nothing about flipping watches, but I have a feeling anyone buying this reference to flip is in for a very rude awakening.

OP, I would just be honest and upfront with them.

Congratulations on THE INCOMING! Oh...and just pass on the watch, tell them why and even the most "scrooged" AD will understand.

I would be too, really. But the OP clearly has concerns (or else he wouldn’t have posted); I’m just saying, there’s another way, and he doesn’t need to feel badly for doing that. (People out there have real problems; having to wait a few extra months for a gold Rolex because the person in the queue before you decided to buy his and flip it instead of passing on it… Not a real problem.)

That said, due diligence, and maybe you’re right. But I’m seeing these sell in the preowned/gray market for at least 7k above retail. Even if the gray seller splits the difference (since they have to make money too, obviously), it’s still a few grand. When I was a new dad, I wouldn’t have turned that down.

I think they'll be happy for you, as well as the next person that asked for that watch. They have two happy customers - win-win.

Congratulations
