A Piece Of My Dream - Long time Coming !

About nine years ago I traveled through the Rockies for the first time, via motorcycle of course, and was awe struck ! The beauty, the open spaces, small towns trapped in the past, self-reliant rugged individuals, all of what I appreciated in life, and a throwback to my childhood being raised on a small farm in VA ………………… some day……….. some day. Fast forward to a three years ago, I decided to downsize drastically, no more keep up with the Jones’, plan for retirement, everything I need nothing I don’t,…………………… life changing experience !

After searching for two years, I finally found it ! I went through this little town in 2020 while riding the Continental Divide Route just looking for a place to wash a few clothes before crossing the Great Basin. I decided to stay the night in a room instead of a tent, and while walking down main street a bull moose casually strolls by with a magnificent view of the Wind River Range in the background……………… this is it.

Pinedale Wyoming, where three mountain ranges come together, two acres on a paved road, 1.5 miles outside city limits, 2.5 form “city center”, NO covenants (restrictions), direct view of the Wind Rivers, New Fork River 150 yards to the rear, the famous Green River only 3 miles away, all making my perfect property. If all goes well, in a few years, I’ll be waking up drinking coffee looking at the amazing Wind River Range !

Not a grand multimillion dollar log home sitting above Vail CO, but a long damn way from living in the back seats of a ‘63 Chevrolet Biscayne !

Don, this looks absolutely stunning!!! I applaud your decision, it’s not an easy one, but I hope you find it liberating and rewarding.

Have you made an offer?
What do you plan to build?

We were in the same boat as you several years ago, and landed in a small village but close enough to a major center … we scaled back on many things. We aren’t living minimalist by any stretch, but pairing back and sizing down definitely has its benefits IMHO.

I can’t wait to see the updates to this thread as you move along through this exciting process.

It’s done, final closing signatures tomorrow, I’ll have the deed shortly ……………. free and clear !

I’ll probably get the well and septic when freeze breaks, and hopefully two small cabins this summer, or possibly next. Plan is to rent them on Airbnb, and have a place to stay when I go out. When I retire, build a garagedominium like I currently live in, and the rentals provide additional income ………………… hopefully.

After going through the process, I’m amazed at the wasteful spending of the working class, which prevents them from achieving that which they desire ………. simply appalling !

Thanks Brian ! No “incoming” threads in the past couple years, and probably none for a few years more !

Fantastic news and a gorgeous town!! Congratulations!! I’ve thought of essentially doing the same except building a big lodge style home in the middle of nowhere and renting it out for those wanting to get away from all the hustle and bustle. Then eventually moving to it when we retire. I don’t know if I can leave the water and sunshine in Florida though. Good luck with this new endeavor and please continue to update this thread with the progress!!

Looks beautiful, can almost smell the crisp air. Coincidentally wind river is also an excellent movie I saw recently.

Congrats! That sounds like a good plan. Beautiful place. I was fortunate to spend a lot of time in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Reminds me of that. Stunning scenery, awesome people, and a peaceful life.

Stunning place!

FYI, a buddy who has some land outside of Durango placed a couple of small modular units (basically half size trailer homes) that look like log cabins on his extra land and does very well with Airbnb. If he decides to eventually build on this lot, he can easily resell them and have them moved off property.

All the kind words greatly appreciated !

The real story, is how fortunate we are to live in a place where hard work, good decisions, determination, adversity, and rugged individualism pays off.

That’s my exact plan ! I’ve spent the weekend evaluating pre-fab cabin shell styles, costs, ROI potential, and drawing the interior layouts of each. Pinedale has a shortage of visitor accommodations, so I want to capitalize on that. Leaning towards 12 x 18 living area, 6 foot porch, small corner bath, micro kitchen area, sleeping for 4, with loft over porch.

I'm jealous of the place you built in NC. Can't wait to see what you do in WY. I'll be riding through the Rockies this summer on the motorcycle.

Should I make my residence in Wyoming when retired, I’ll definitely build another barndominium. Probably identical to the current one, with one or two less bays. Considering lifestyle, minimal upkeep, and spousal delete, I have no desire to live in anything else !

I was in Evanston just a couple months ago. I love the scenery in Wyoming. I Saw a couple bull moose plus countless mule deer, elk and pronghorn my first day there.

I’m planning on going back for fly fishing (looking at the green river) and hunting.
