Just because you can afford something doesn't mean there are not better, or less expensive alternatives. I can afford a Ferrari - but I don't have one because it would not be a prudent way to spend my money nor do I believe that it is $140,000 better than a Porsche 911. In that same vein, maybe some don't feel that a Sub is $4,000 better than a Planet Ocean.....and guess what, it is not. I own both and love both, but my PO was half the cost with nearly all the quality.

Omega makes a GREAT product and is a company with significant history in horology. Most people on this earth could only dream of owing an Omega timepiece and your friend is going to make you ponder such an acquisition because it is not a Rolex. Oy freakin' vay. Rolex is great, Omega is great, simple as that. Buy what you want and what you like - guess all of us who can afford Patek should be ashamed of buying a Rolex.....
Wisdom.

I love both brands, though I'm an especially big fan of Omega. I think Omega is a good complement to Rolex in the watch world because they take a more avant garde approach to watchmaking, and they're willing to do things that Rolex doesn't. They're a bit more lively and youthful in that respect. Omega can also sometimes be a fantastic value for the amount of watch you get for the money, especially if you buy from trusted sellers or vintage. For example, I'm wearing an 18kt Omega perpetual calendar chronograph right now the cost of which was less than many gold Rolex 3-handers. Not that a gold Rolex 3-hander isn't a wonderful watch that's worth owning, it absolutely is if that's what sings to you. But Omega can be a great choice, particularly for we WIS who have different priorities than folks off the street. :) I wouldn't let someone dissuade you from an Omega you like because he's seen the word Rolex more times on TV.

Love your entire post but this is precisely why I like Omega. IMO and generally speaking, their designs are a bit more unusual but still timeless looking. They're also very innovative from a movement and materials perspective.

I pretty much agree with what was said all along about the value of the two brands and the quality of both. For me, it's my money and I'll buy what ever I choose. Screw those who don't like my choices. That's their problem.

Choosing to buy an Omega is ok...

However, choosing to buy an Omega over a quality ROLEX is NOT the BEST move.

There are places where Omega gets more recognition than Rolex. This is a Rolex forum and I would not expect any of you to believe it, but it's true and such is life. As for value, the Omega 751 is a GREAT day-date movement, I would argue better than the Rolex 1556 of the same era, yet you'll have a hard time getting an 1803 under 4K, while even 18k Constellations with the 751 often sell under 3K. Yes, this is a very specific example but wear a 751 for a little while and you just might surprise yourself, if you are truly objective about smooth timekeeping.

Obviously, they both have pluses and minuses; however, to me, the edge goes to Rolex for their timeless looks AND resale value (even if you'll never sell). It's probably flawed thinking but I love knowing that when purchased properly, that very expensive Rolex will be worth either (close to) the same as what you paid or in some instances more...

I wear what I wanna wear. I can afford a lot more expensive shoes but I choose to wear Converse All Stars or Jack Purcells every day.

You might want to instead ask yourself the question "Why get a Rolex if you can afford a **insert more exclusive/expensive brand here**".

A few of mine..

traditionally Omegas have been around half the price of a Rolex and this seems about right when you compare the quality of the watches. Theres no way I would spend Rolex money on an Omega. My brand new speedy is off for warranty service for running 37s/d slow. Even though it is not a COSC watch I would at least expect some basic QC before it leaves the factory.
My thoughts exactly.

Currently i hate the way Omega have really jncreased their prices to near Rolex prices. This angers me only because I'm looking for a Speedmaster Professional as my 2nd watch (after my Sub C)! Lol

I'm dismayed at how many models Omega release, and also how many special editions there are.

CMIIW they are the second largest (by volume) luxury watch manufacturer (either them or Tag). Increasing price is not a bad strategy when it comes to luxury market. It keeps secondary market alive, which is good for present owners.

But that's not happening for Omega owners... I posted proof of that. The used market for Omega is pretty weak pricing-wise.

I own a Speedy Pro, but Omega seems to be the masters of diluting their own products. Bond limited additions with a cheesy fake family crest, endless commerative Speedies, countless variations within the same product line, etc. Four new versions of the DSOTM at Basel? Yikes. Once they release a commerarive Speedy for Alrin's first ham sandwich in space, I'm selling my Omega!

As an Omega owner, I feel the need to chime in here. Most people who buy Omegas can also afford to buy a Rolex. Additionally, iconic Omegas maintain their value and appreciate in the same way Rolex's do. The main difference is that Omegas can still be had for a significant discount off retail whereas Rolex's cannot. If you factor in the discount you should get (rather than full msrp at a boutique), then you wont lose money selling it a couple of years out. I got over 25% off when I bought my speedmaster from an AD last August. I love my Speedmaster as much as any other watch I have ever owned.

Why exactly is that?

Personally, it's been the best move for me.

I'll never flip them, and they are imho far better to wear and enjoy than my Rolexs.

I actually just reached out to davidsw to flip my blnr for an omega seamaster 300 Ti.

I once love my blnr, now it's never worn. Again, best move for me.

Seth cannot be stopped! Do any of your watches feel safe ?

I imagine your watchbox as being similar to the apprentice and superdog comes in once a month and says "you're fired" to one of your watches. Then off to dsw

Hope you enjoy the new omega!

Ha. That's about right. But oddly enough, I've skiwn down considerably.

I get bored easy. But while I clearly do like rolex watches, I'm finding good reason lately get rid of them.

I haven't worn many rolex watches. A Datejust and Submariner. Neither really did it for me. The desire to own them was way stronger than the feelings of actually owning them. I flipped a Seamaster to get the Sub. Then flipped the Sub to get my Planet Ocean Chrono. Never looked back. After I sold my DJ to get the Sub, I found a Seamaster 120 Automatic for my dressier watch. End of the day, I know both of my Omegas won't be worth as much as a rolex would. I'd rather have pieces that I enjoy to wear than worry about future resale value. Anything I buy in the future is a keeper.

Both nice watches and a lot of variety with Omega. I'd welcome a nice crispy 2254.50.00 into the stable anytime. Love the lume.
