Hi all,

A friend recently told me that the SD4k has 2 different dials. Specifically that the earlier ones are more matted than the later ones. I was wondering if anyone has more info on this or can point me in the direction of some photo comparisons. Ive been searching on TRF but can't seem to find a thread on this. Any help would be great as I'm looking to pick one up and want to figure out which I prefer (if thats even a decision I need to take into account).

Somebody would have posted their unicorn or a grey dealer would be selling it for $50k.

Initially I was in the camp that believed there was a subtle change to a different finish on the dial but I am absolutely convinced that the dial simply photographs differently in different lighting conditions. So much so that it's easy to come to the wrong conclusion.
I now firmly believe there was only ever one iteration of the dial following the thread way back on the subject

I’m confident only one dial exists on this timepiece. The production run was only a few years, highly unlikely Rolex would change dial variations in that timeframe.

Bought mine at the tail end of 2015, whilst trying it on with a Sub at an AD! Oh I miss the good ol’ days when one could pick up a sports model without the need to go on a pilgrimage.

Same watch, different lighting from an AD late 2017. I can see where the confusion might come from.

Would be cool to see the new 126610 side by side with the SD4K to see how the lugs compare as the SD4K was always pointed as having slighly leas pronounced lugs versus the 116610 (which I don’t like)

I have the matt dial and was convinced a glossy dial did exist but if you say thus is the same watch ,Now I am confused

Indoor lighting makes the dial "glossy" like a deep black but once it hits some harsh lighting you can see the matte come out.

Still the best 6 digit reference out there hands down.

I’ve got one of my own, but I’ve also seen and handled a few SD4K over the years and agree that there is only one matte dial.

To me, it’s the way light plays off the dial - the deep black “gloss” effect indoors contrasted with the sunlit almost gray-brown matte effect - that makes this watch my absolute favorite Rolex.

Totally agree that it’s the best six digit reference out there.

I couldn’t agree more.

Everything is right about this one. Lugs, proportions, bracelet, dial and only came across 2 since 2015.

Never seen nor have I heard of a dialvariation on the SD4K. Have tried on at least 3 or 4 different ones before buying the one I own and have never noticed any difference in the dial finishes. I do agree with the above statement the dial really changes with different lightning.
Although it being one of the trademarks of the Sea-Dweller, personally I'm not a huge fan of the matte dial. I would prefer a glossy one. But most of the time it's just a black dial, not too matte, not too glossy. So not a big deal.

Actually i think it is not a matte dial. I’d refer to it as a Satin dial.
