AP for sure. I wouldn't get the GMT if it was 3 grand cheaper.

I'd never be considering a 16710 at that price. Might as well get PM for a bit more.

This crazy 3186 hype... For what?!

Get the AP, makes the most sense for that money.

The price of the GMT is crazy. If you plan to wear and enjoy it, why not get a 16710 with a cal 3185 at half the price and benefit from the appreciation over time. While I agree that there is a lot of hype on GMT 3186...but as there become less BNIB offered for sale, there stock is only going to rise.

AP hands down, another level of quality. Even if the AP was 5k more I would still go with the AP.

I have had one 3186/7 movement have the spring fail; its a simple service part to replace which is upgraded with new design.

My 16710 / 3186 has increased in price 75% in the year that I have owned it. When I searched for this particular 16710/3186 (I had an original back in 2007 but stupidly flipped it), it took me a while to source one at a decent price (thanks DavidSW).

Although the AP is a great watch, I’d go with the GMT; it would always be a special watch.

The 3186 have increase at least $5k in the last 18 months, not sure that the AP has performed the same.

Everybody talks about the hype, and the weak points of this mouvement and the 3185 is better and it is too expensive and they will never pay this kind of premium and and and....

Reality is, the 3186 is much rarer than the standard 3185, for the past 5 to 7 years the price only went one way.

If you want to preserve the value of your watch Rolex 16710 / 3186 is the watch to buy.
AP is a nicer watch, better finished but won’t hold it price the same way.

Now if you buy NOS, with these watches it is more for speculation than for wearing it, as it won’t be NOS the moment you put it on your wrist.

So you need to be careful what is the purpose of your purchase.

If you can buy an AP at retail still I would wager it is worth more than the Rolex at the inflated price 5 years from now. AP's hold value well and are now starting to inch up like the SS Patek's. AP is also a much better product as it should be at twice the retail. I love my sub but my AP is so much nicer better to own and wear.

I’m 100% convinced now NOT to go with the GMT. Not only that, I also now realize that there is this trend of artificially inflating prices for hard-to-get-but-still-in-production pieces. Initially, I thought this was an outlier phenomenon that mainly affected the Nautiluses, Aquanauts and Daytonas of this world. But right after I posted my question yesterday, the number of 2018 BLRO at 2.5x and 3x MSRP exploded.

I’m going for the AP as soon as the AD calls me. At the same time, I honestly hope none of these extortionists/resellers get their asking price because this would mean the market just accepts the fact that each new hot piece can be sold at double or triple the MSRP.

Indeed. The 16710 GMT has seen an astronomical increase through many dealers in the last year alone. The GMT was made in high numbers and will likely be available for decades. Price increases are mainly due to social media creating hype and demand. It probably won't slow down anytime soon, however. That's the unfortunate (likely) reality.

Buying the currently hyped watch is expensive. Dealers know this.

If you can find a model that speaks to you and isn't on the list of hyped watches, you'll come out ahead.

This. If you are going to wear it, I would not buy NOS. 3185 is a solid workhorse.

Yes and it is still extending, even onto PMs, I checked the prices of my RG Nautilus and it is now pushing £50K, the retail when I bought, with a good discount too, was £33K.

To anyone advocating for a 16710 3186, do you actually wear your watches or are they collection-only and sit in storage? I'd love to see a 3186 example posted with daily wear on the case and bracelet with a faded and scratched insert.

Post 'em if you've got 'em.
