Submariner Sells for Record $1 Million at Christie's
Last night at Christie's An Evening of Exceptional Watches auction in New York, where $7.77 million in watches was sold, a Rolex made history. A “Very Fine, Extraordinarily Rare and Early Stainless Steel Automatic Wristwatch with Center Seconds and Gilt 'Explorer Dial'“ sold for a cool $1,068,500 – making this a world record for a Rolex Submariner sold at auction. https://www.forbes.com/sites/roberta.../#6be0d3d138ee |

Why? What do I not appreciate about that piece? I am clearly missing something.

Trying to understand the human psychology behind such a purchase. The buyer who is probably anonymous, has bought bragging rights amoungst his peers. Not everyone has that kinda spare change lying around to squander on an old watch.
Either that or the buyer is slightly insane. |

I know, right? A piece (though very rare) comes with a missing bezel and bracelet and sells for over 1 million dollars? I don't get it. But, it was owned by the original purchaser and worn as a tool for decades and never polished! … Yeah, I don't care.
I just don't get it, like many others here. There is hope for Doc with his scratched up Smurf. :) |

The missing bezel and cracked crystal added $1,068,000 to the value.

I'm not very knowledgeable of the vintage collectors scene. Is the idea that the dial and case are in good condition, so that if a bezel and bracelet were sourced the owner has a good condition rare vintage watch?

There was talk of it coming back on the market as a new improved version having gone through a thorough restoration.
I assume that means the will tastefully and delicately add the original parts....such as splashed of magnolia paint and white gloss splashes. I for one will want to know if period correct paint was used before I make any offer. I also heard that Dulux paints are disputing the provenance of this piece. |

This is important as each scratch, mark and patina has a specific lineage that can be traced to one owner!
The importance of this piece as a reflection of the limitless cash driving the vintage market cannot be overstated... |

Everything is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
I've read that, or words to that effect, a million times on watch forums. It's no less true in this case than it is in any case. Whoever paid that amount for the watch apparently knows more about the watch than we do. Either that, or he's lost his mind.
