Less than 1% of Rolex owners know the reference number of their watch(es).

Maybe that's because knowing the reference number simply isn't important to but 1% or much less of Rolex buyers. I'd guess less than 20% know the name on their watch, again, because it isn't important to them.

Is this a game? What are you starting? Why would most owners want to know? They aren’t watch nerds like us.

And how do we actually know the statistics? This would be a tough game.

But, for some reason hulk works for me. When someone says Batman, I admit I don’t love it.

Reference numbers are useful when discussing the various iterations of a model through the years with some specificity, e.g., Submariners: 6200, 6204, 6205, 6536, 6536/1, 5508, 5510, 6538, 5512, 5513, 16800, 168000, 14060, 14060M, 114060, 16610, 116610, etc.

Where is this data point sourced from. Are we surveyed when buying a watch? Is this important for ownership.

I know my model numbers....but unfortunately none of mine have cool nicknames. I love the nicknames. Internally I referred to my white Milgauss as the BB8, hence my avatar.

Know their Rolex is an automatic movement and not battery powered. I witnessed this once. It was a gift and after not wearing it for a few days it had stopped working as he said, but after I shook it a few times it worked again! It must need a new battery. True story.

Sadly, you are right. It is a status symbol for many, possibly some who can not even afford them buy them anyway. Hence the zillion threads on small scratches, etc.
