Considering a Vintage Rolex Forum/Sub-Forum....
No doubt many of you would be aware that TZ and other websites have split up Rolex discussion into:
(a) modern Rolex; (b) vintage Rolex. On TZ this happened many years ago, and it resulted IMHO in some desirable and undesirable results. Without going into the reasons for and against a Vintage Rolex Forum the moderators and I have discussed the possibility of a (a) and (b) classification over the past couple of years. It has on balance been decided that it may not overall be beneficial to have a separate categorization of modern and vintage Rolex. This situation is as always under review. With the advent of the Rolex Tech Forum as a sub-forum it maybe that the possibility for a new additional sub-forum exists relating to Vintage Rolex Watches. However, one has to have regard and respect that the General Rolex Discussion Forum is such a very active forum with the great advantage of having a 'melting pot' of ideas from all different perspectives and levels of knowledge and interest. That is one great forum for the meeting of members and their minds on all topics related to Rolex. The addition of forums and/or sub-forums can lead to the disintegration of participation, interest and enjoyment. So at this time, the situation is still under review/consideration. The moderators and I will make any announcement if there is to be a change, but at this time the situation will remain as it is at present. Regards Steve Owner/Administrator

As an owner of an oldie and a noobie, I like having just one place to hang out and see the vast range of beautiful timepieces Rolex has poduced over the years.

Thanks Steve, I for one would like to see a vintage forum, and do appreciate how that could thin out the main forum, but with membership seeming to double just about every month now, perhaps we soon will have the numbers to carry it off. How about a poll on it to get an idea of numbers for or against.

The way it is now is fine. I plan on getting a couple (or as many as my wife lets me) vintage Rolex watches. I would hate to have to go to one part of the forum to talk vintage and then another part of the forum to talk current models.

I would love to see a sub-forum of vintage Rolex.
With the current large membership, it would not detract at all from the main forum. |

What evidence do you have for that proposition or is it just your best gut feeling belief?

Well there has been growth on the forum no doubt about that.....but.....
The current format of a 'General Forum' fosters a more dynamic level of discussion where modern enthusiasts can learn about vintage models/aspects. Newbies and seasoned veterans of Rolex interact and this can on balance provide a lot of interesting discussion. Having a vintage forum can lead to a reduction on the quality and level of input from different perspectives, it can also in some cases result in some self-appointed 'vintage' experts having less inclination to assist newbies and give rise to levels of superiority and inferiority. These are generalisations, but they are considerations based on experiences I have witnessed on other forums (e.g. when TZ split up the General Forum into 'modern' and 'vintage'). Nothing is forever and maybe one day down the line we will have a vintage forum, but for now on balance things seems to be going pretty well. You know what they say, if it ain't busted don't touch it....that's also a consideration.

I'm a member on a few forms and have always found the ones with too many sub forus aren't as...I don't know... friendly.
Keep it all together for now is my opinion.

Hi Steve,
I like the present format, getting lots of different perspectives really adds to the mix. One thing I have noticed though is that with the fast growing membership, some great posts can get missed. TRF is a victim of its own success! I can see the pros and cons of a vintage forum, but maybe there might be another way to display new threads. TRF is a great forum and i have really enjoyed my stay here so far. As I've been here more I've delved into the open forum almost as much as the watch side, and found the members to be be a great bunch. The trick I suppose is to keep this spirit as the numbers grow. Like a lot of guys here, one of my watches is from the early 80's so very nearly Vintage but I still go by the old saying "If its not broke; dont fix it".
I think the Forum performs very well in its current lay-out. |

Hi again. Disregard my former points. I've just had a look at some of the other watch forums and this has the best layout by a long way.

i like vintage but also like the mixture so everyone can see what's going on. excellent way to find knowledge and a new part of the hobby. snobbery kills fun hobbies imo.

Considering a Vintage Rolex Forum/Sub-Forum
I'm all in for a Rolex Vintage Forum ('RVF') because I like and owned a few of them. Am still looking around the market for something worth buying at this time...
So, should we start the RVF anyways????? |

I think this is a great idea to have a separate section for vintage watches.
I don't know how many people do this, but I typically keep up by using the New Posts button at the top of the page and see the latest happenings, so typically I care less about what category anything is in. However, when I start looking for specific information, I then will go into the sub-forums or use the search function in specific sections, and this is definitely a good thing to help keep things separated. I don't think this precludes people from posting vintage stuff in the general discussion section, but more specific things can be placed in the vintage section. Also, as with some of our other sub-forums (e.g., watch out), certain experts tend to reside only within the confines of this area, so by having the addition of a Vintage section, experts in vintage models may tend to frequent more and lend their expertise in an area that they feel the most comfortable. I can't back any of this up with fact, just my thought process however.

Now for the animals forum and the food forum.
