5196r- do I want one? Hmmm

So weirdest thing... i woke up and started thinking i wanted a dress watch. And had a craving for a 5196r. Probably could get one around $18k +/- i assume.

Weird... considering the new job is jeans and sneakers (no sandals).

Woken up in the twilight zone

If i was not expecting other watches coming. Id probably act on the impulse.

The 5196 is such a sleeper, I think itll work fine with jeans and sneakers. Ive been contemplating a platinum for a while now.

5196r- do I want one? Hmmm

Something similar happens to me, in my case with 5196-J (YG), I rarely wear formal but I “need” one ;-).
Never saw a YG or WG in the flesh and I have been looking for it the last days visiting or calling all ADs in South California but none had it in stock. I have seen some RG that are great but not what I look for, and a PT that is very super-nice but seems a different piece to me with that dial with arabic numbers.

I woke up on Tuesday feeling that urge for a dress watch and a Brueguet at that. Ended up getting a 3700 Worldtime that is incoming today.

Got it this afternoon. 38mm; Rose gold, extremely legible dial, breguet hands, coin side, that crown, 9mm thick, and a date window.

My advice: Wait a month before you start pursuing this. I am in a similar spot...I can wear jeans or khakis to work, but I had a hankering for a nice dress watch. I bought a 5119r to satisfy that itch. Great watch, but I maybe wore it twice. Ended up trading it plus another piece for a SkyDweller, taking a hit for doing this with a grey market dealer.

So give it some time-the itch might just pass. If it doesn’t, then go for it!

I have entertained the same reference on and off but the absence of a screw down case back and crown is a big deterrent for me. There aren't even gaskets for when you accidentally get it wet...

I say you do it.

I like the statement that a dress piece makes. Plus, it should pop on the wrist if you’re wearing it against a pair of Wrangler jeans and T.

Agree!

Alternatively, go straight for the PCC you have been eyeing.

A 5196 is stunning until you open the case back and see there is a huge washer around a tiny movement filling up the large diameter case...

5196 is a great watch but if you're in jeans mainly for work or casual wear, you may want to consider the white gold variant over the rose gold. I wear my annual with jeans and it's fine.

I think the 5196r works with jeans in the same way a Sub works with suit. Some like it and some don’t but it doesn’t look strange.

I think for many of us with at least a few Pateks and Rolexes, why not get dress pieces? Pay the right price and don't be an idiot and you should be ok :)
