How big is a Datejust 36 really?

Considering that Datejust 41 is actually about 39.2mm.

I wonder if Datejust 36 is exactly 36mm or slightly more or less.
Can anyone measure their Datejust 36 like the Datejust 41 pictures?
Thanks

I really don’t know for sure, but when I look at the 41 and 36, the 41 seems much bigger than 3mm.

By comparison, my Sub is 40 and my Speedmaster is 42 but they like identical

Yes I’d be interested in this ... although I’m guessing it’s bang on 36mm

Agree. I've had 36 and now 41. 36 was way too small for liking. My minimum size now is 40mm. Must be the dj41 dial, but it looks bigger than my hulk, which per spec should be. Are those calipers calibrated? Lol. Maybe measure a sub or other watches with same calipers?

Try measuring from the edge of the case to the other side including the crown.

It should be 41

Yes the DJ36 does measure 36mm, but the profile is a little different. It’s a bit dainty in comparison to a DJ41.

It's usually measured diagonally 10 to 4 (and should not include the crown).

And if you do that, Rolex does misrepresent their case sizes.

Why? Do you think that’s an accurate representation of the case diameter?

However you measure it, the 36mm is exactly 36mm.

If you measure the DJ41 with digital callipers from side to side, comes in at 39.5. Measure it diagonally as per watch manufacture measurements, and it’s larger. Yes, I have measured it.

The newer 36mm is exactly 36mm, too, however the lug-to-lug length is very slightly shorter.

The thing with Rolex is they play with the case to give it a larger look/feel. The older style 36mm wears/feels/looks like a 38mm or thereabouts, though it definitely is 36mm. It has fatter lugs and a case that isn’t as refined at the newer versions.

Hold up a DJ2 directly next to a DJ41 and actual real estate on the wrist, there is literally nothing in it - they both take up almost the same room. Rolex thinned the lugs, slimmed the case, slimmed the bezel, and thinned our the batons, amongst other things. On the wrist, it appears a little bit smaller, but in actual sizing, there is nothing hardly to it. It’s why Rolex left it as the DJ41 and not the DJ40.

It’s because it really isn’t a 40mm or less watch.

The OP39, that’s a sub-40mm watch and it shows when you hold it up directly next to the DJ41. Anyone who says there is no difference, hasn’t had, or done that.

It’s 36mm yes. You can look it up. I don’t know why the actual measurement matters that much when it’s on your wrist, it’s all about how big your wrist is, your personal style, and the proportions (dial / bezel / size and shape of the lugs).

In comparison to a DJ41 which is actually 39.5 and literally the same case as a 39mm Explorer which I own, the 36mm DJ looks a lot smaller.

Just my opinion. Wear what you dig but be prepared for both criticism and praise if you come to an Internet forum with such a question.

Most of the 36mm models might be considered a nominal 36mm, meaning that it fits in a group of watches that are 35 to 37mm but fall into the "36mm class of watches". They likely began life at slightly more than 36mm, until final machining and finishing. Same for the 41mm class of watches that just don't tip into the area where they can be called a 42mm.

Is this accurate?

When shopping I chose the 39mm Explorer over the DJ41 cause the DJ41 seemed larger. I thought the 39mm Explorer was the same case as the now-discontinued OP39.

I feel like my Daytona, DD40, and Explorer 39mm are smaller than the DJ41 in actual size - when compared side by side.

A little over 3mm doesn’t sound like much on paper but there is a noticeable difference. I think it’s more of an optical illusion based on the dials. They say the dial on the 36 is the same size as the submariner dial, there is a lot of dial real estate on the 41. When you look at the cases metal to metal width comparison side by side, they aren’t hugely different (try not to see the dials when you do that). But when you look at the whole package with the dials, I think that really plays with your eyes.

My take is as follows:

28mm to 31mm is ladies size watch.
34mm is boys size watch.
36mm is mens size watch.
40mm and larger is oversize watch.

For me, it’s 36mm-40mm on my 7 1/2 inch wrist.

It’s all personal perspective:
39mm and larger is my mens size watch, everything else is ladies size watch.

Hard and fast rules are difficult in watches. As everybody prefers what they like and that is okay. I like your sizing for sports watches on bracelets. However, for dress watches on straps, the sweet zone for men, to me, is 33mm to 37mm.

I get your point and agree.

If you reverse the positions on those two watches on your wrist I bet they even look more similar in size.
