This arrived today, and all I can say is, “WOW!” I’m over the moon. This one is NOS, absolutely perfect. My name is on the card, dated yesterday! I feel my DD journey is officially complete.

I had almost the same experience! Wanted this for years then finally came across it very unexpectedly one day. Love it! I tend to wear it a little less than my WG DD w/ rhodium Roman dial, although it's my favorite. Where di you find this NOS??

Every so often, I’d call around to online sellers that listed them as available. Frustration would set in as they always seemed to be phantom listings to get a phone call or inquiry. But this time, from an unknown but seemingly reputable seller (after doing some due diligence), I was able to secure it NOS through his network. Timing and luck! Better lucky than good (an old adage that rings true in many walks of life!).

I have champagne sticks on my YG President, but I bought a factory African Mahogany dial (above left) as a potential swap-out, as a modern tribute to my dad’s 18038 with the same from my childhood. Looks awesome, fits the 3055/3155 models, so I’ve been tempted to do that swap recently. It’s really striking (in a positive way!) on a gold President. The warmth each offers just plays off the other.

Curious about AD availability:

I am on the prowl for a YG DD40, likely with a black dial, but want to see the diagonal motif in person. I wish it was just solid black. I love the concept of the hatch pattern, just do not want it to be overwhelming. I am also eyeing a few other dials.

But black (with sticks, or maybe the baguettes) is the front runner. I prefer new from an AD. I am aware of the trusted sources here, and comfortable with them, but, AD is best for me if the price difference is only a few grand. I can walk back into the AD, get a cleaning, get a sizing, and more. I appreciate that.

So, I have been off the Rolex grid for a while, and have no idea what the availability of these things is? My local AD has one, but not the one for me. Any experience in wait time for a YG w/ black dial. Are these hard to find? I have no idea.

Also, keep the pictures coming ! Wow.. this thread is so nice.
I am headed toward a YG DD40, for what I perceive as that classic, iconic, presence.
But believe me, it is not an easy choice, soooo many nice options.

Thanks folks.

Everything is scare right now. When I visited my AD a couple of weeks ago. They didn't have any YG DD 40s only a RG with diamond bezel.

Presumably it’s platinum, is it a relatively new DD40? If not new, what is the serial range? Reference number?

Here’s a wood dial, either walnut or mahogany - With burl wood not having regular grain, it’s tough to tell the difference between these two.

They are both factory and brand new.
It is platinum. If I remember correctly it is ref 118296.

Interesting, thanks!
I’ve only ever noticed that text pattern on modern DDs with it printed on tiny plaques, rather than directly on the dial. I did find a 118346 with the same dial and text pattern (identical but for a diamond bezel), describing it as a MOP dial - I assume that’s what this is?

The 228238 40 is the new sheriff in town, and not sure how Rolex can ever top this reference

Agree. The new DD40s are perfect in every single damn way.

Rolex wont be able to improve much on them to be honest. Havent worn mine for a few weeks since I'm still in honeymoon with my 116618LB.

Here is a pic to remind myself how nice the DD40s are. - I will wear this again tomorrow. :)

The one on the right is a imprint factory pearl dial.. I have seen and almost bought the DD36PT with the exact dial configuration from Rolex Boutique.
