Well here is something...

... I never knew.

Upon reviewing my newly acquired, GMT II service papers, from LA Watchworks,
they listed my watch serial # (rightfully so) but just noticed they also included what looks to me like, my 3185 serial number on the service sheet too.

Paging Bas!!! does every movement have it’s own serial number?

Yes, every movement has a serial number. Many brands have done this for many years.

No need to close it, I'm sure many people didn't know and it's not something we talk about much. Good topic

Movements have almost always had serial numbers. That's how they are catalogued and verified for COSC certification.

It's not your watch that was tested, only the movement.

The real question is when did they start putting s/n on movements? I have quite a few cal.420, 1400, 10 1/2, N/A etc. older movements without any identifying numbers at all.

When a watch goes to an RSC, they compare the movement serial and verify that it reconciles with the case serial in their records when the watch was assembled.

Yet another method to verify the watch is genuine from when it left the manufacturer and that it is not a Frankenstein-watch.

How much would that service have cost at an official Rolex service centre? Seems expensive for an independent?

It does seem expensive if that $500 case and bracelet refinish is the same one that the RSC does for 'free' with a service.

My RSC service was $750 base but let me tell you, it's been a ridiculous ride that I still haven't been able to get off of. I do think that LAWW's service price is too expensive and it doesn't help that Rolex is ridiculously stingy with their service parts to outside watchmakers so you end up paying a lot just for the necessary parts. However, I think I would have paid extra just to get it done right.

In regards to the polish, that I will say that LAWW is worth it. RSC's polishing is barely mediocre compared to the artisanship of LAWW (at least in my experience).

Getting back to RSC, so I've been dealing with a multi-year battle to get them to just do it right. They have screwed up on my single watch so many times. I think it's been back to them six or seven times now, maybe more. It's on its third re-servicing and it's one of the most simple watches in terms of complications, or lack thereof (14060). You'd think after the first screw up they'd maybe get a more experienced watchmaker on it, right? Well that definitely didn't happen for the second re-service. Guess I'll have to wait and see if the third time is the charm. Hopefully they didn't screw something else up. I feel like I'm always rolling the dice when I send it to RSC. To put it in perspective, this debacle started back in October of 2018....still not resolved...yeah, so there's that...

Maybe so, but LAWW can dress up a watch like no other from what I have seen on TRF. Think it’s worth it.

Wow, LAWW is very expensive compared to RSC base price of $750 which includes a full case/bracelet refinishing. I recently used the Dallas RSC for my SubC. Absolutely no complaints. Outstanding factory case/bracelet refinishing!

Get what you pay for. Whether one wants to play rsc roulette or go straight to one of the best casework guys in the business is their call.

If you’re patient I once did a no polish RSC service then sent the watch to beau for casework afterwards. Mainly because the watch was naked and I wanted some assurance on it.

I thought the service receipt was high as well and built in to my purchase, but overall, what’s an extra 500, lol
