My 10c of advice, wind them and wear them, if only on holidays or when you have a short break.

Watches, like anything mechanical, need to be run from time to time if only to keep everything lubricated, and, excuse the pun, ticking over.

These watches are built to last and you will have no trouble handing them on to your kids in due course, but for now take a bit of time to enjoy these beautiful timepieces yourself.

No, you do not "need" to have regular maintenance done on a wrist watch if that isn't in your view of machinery care.

There are many who do believe in regular maintenance, so this type of person would get piece-of-mind with regular cleaning and oiling.

An older watch may see some deterioration of the seals and gaskets, most notably the crystal to case seal. If it has been stored in extreme temperatures, a pressure test could be done to know if it is still water tight.

You do not need a watch winder. Just set the time, wind a few times and off you go. I would not even bother setting the dates given the limited wear. Easy as that.

So you're confident your kid will wear them to his job? What if he follows your idea and keep them for his kids?

Just wear it every weekend and then if its keeping time well, don't bother with service and if its losing time or gaining time, send it for service!

Enjoy your watches how you want to op.

If that means storing them for your children, do it.

You can always send them in for service years down the line if you desire.

Why don't you give the watches to somebody who will use the watches for their intended purpose? Wearing them. Give them to me.

Assuming that parts are still available and Rolex haven't decided that 20 years is max for keeping parts to service your watch

I'd wind them up 50 winds, synchronizing the time, check the time after 24hrs for accuracy and let them sit until they stop so you will know if the power reserve length is met. If it checks out to spec no worries. Your watch will tell you when it's time for service.

They'll be fine, I expect. I recently bought a NOS 16570 polar Exp II from 2005. Never previously worn, fully stickered etc. Wound it and wore it first time and all is well. Keeps within COSC - no worries. I'm not going to service it for the foreseeable.

Fantastic idea. I'd be interested in the GMT. You're a Sub man. Don't be greedy.

there were many reasons why i haven't worn my rolexes for 8 years. I changed job, and went thru a divorce, and sold a house, and moved to little studio, sold my $40+k sports car, and now drive a clunker. my confident level has plummeted. Rolex presents success and confidence for me (I'm not speaking for everyone). Right now i have neither. Divorce has taken a toll on me. I didn't want to tell people my life story in my original post but it seems many people were wondering why I don't wear my rolexes so i think i owe them an explanation.

This is sound advice. Even modern rolex when not run for long periods of time can have issues with lubricants (drying?). My understanding is they do better when run compared to when not run.

Of course you don't have to wear them if you don't want to. You don't have to justify to anyone, they are your watches to do as you please.

In terms of servicing, wind the watches and just see how they keep time over 24hrs, if it's within spec then no service is required. There is always a chance they can mess up something during service too, so better to avoid unnecessary service if possible.

I wouldn’t let Rolex service center open the gmt watch up. It’s NOS.

Have you made money on these investments? I wonder how much a brand new GMT will be worth in 20 more years?

What's NOS?

What do you mean wouldn't let rolex service center open the GMT? don't people send rolex to the service center to have it serviced?

do i still need to send in rolex for service if not worn?

I doubt you will need to service the watches which aren’t used. I’ve read how people who wear their watches on weekends/occasionally too get it serviced after 15-20 years after maybe it started losing a minute a day or something. Many people buy Rolexes as future investment which they never wear.
Though I would suggest you wind the watch after every few months and once a year check how accurately it keeps the time. Match it second to second with your phone and see for few days. If it gains a few seconds or loses. Most watches gain a few seconds a day, which is perfectly fine. And once in a while, when you wind them, also move them around or wear while you’re home for sometime. Just so the oils are not settled. Your kids will be very happy when they get brand new Rolexes! :-)

No need for service I have watches sitting for months maybe years never any problem ! Even my AD says never need to service it ever unless you get a problem or your watch picks up scratches and dents and you want it out . I have like way way cheaper watches never had a problem on them so no need to on a Rolex .

If ain’t broke don’t fix it !

Would you change the oil in a car that has been sitting in the garage for the past 8 years? If you answer yes to this, then service the watch.

If you think the answer is no, then wear the watch and enjoy driving the car.

The analogy with a car service is not so relevant. Or lets say, not entirely.

Yes, watches do need service, but not so often as a car!
Changing the oil in the car is not the same as a full service movement on a watch when the mechanism is fully taken apart.
Do you ever take the whole engine apart on a car during a service, even a major one?

If a watch is modern and it has not been worn in years......I would not run to RSC to do a full service. I would wear it and see if it keeps time. This is one aspect: is it accurate?
The other important aspect is if the watch if still waterproof, in case I want to swim with it.
This can be easily determined with a pressure test.

I am all in for maintaining a watch properly. I have sent for service around 15 watches in the last years...but these were all vintage pieces which I knew that have not been serviced in decades.
On a modern watch I would take another approach.

You have a right not to wear them and leave to your kids especially many people buying from AD to sell it without using. Go ahead and keep them in safebox if you wanna.

I don’t think there’s a point in servicing it when you have no plan to wear them very often in the nearest future.
