I prefer the ceramic bezel version.

The bezel on the earlier models tend to accumulate scratches and this drove me nuts.

I’m not and probably will never be a fan of a ceramic bezel on the Daytona. Metal for me

116520-both colors for sure, but the black dial 116520 is especially stunning..I think.

I have often wondered about a 116520 bezel on a 116500 as well, but the other dial version. The 500’s version of the black dial is, to my eye, toned down nicely compared to the 520’s version and I’m not keen on the ceramic bezel. I think the white dial in the 500 is just trying to copy the dials in the 16520 and I prefer the 16520 over the 116500.

Or like fake teeth. It has that pseudo white hue to me as well... Not a fan. Current hype will die down and the 116520 will be king in due time.

I mean ceramic by a mile! Selling double the price. I try to convince myself everyday to like the other more as I am on the ceramic waiting list.

Love the rubber, 500 for me without a doubt, a lot more striking!

Sorry for the dumb newbie question... But what year did the 116520 go from Zenith movement to in-house? And why would the Zenith movement be more desirable?

thx

From 2000. I used to think the Zenith movement is more desirable but after many years having both I now prefer the new movement which also has longer power reserve.

Personally I think 116520 white dial is a little bit too bright and the legibility is a bit lower due to its shininess; also the bezel scratches easily, therefore I never pulled the trigger - still an amazing watch; I bought the 116500LN because not only it has the black ceramic bezel upgrade which prevents from scratching, the 3 black circles makes it really reminiscent to the vintage Daytona aesthetics, so that was a easy win for me.

As for 116520 vs 116500LN black version, I like them both - but again, I'd prefer the ceramic bezel both from a practical (scratch-proof) and aesthetic point of view.

Thanks for the help all. If I wanted a white face, 116520, with stainless bezel... Are there any differences between the 2000-2015? Special years I should be looking out for etc? Looks like about $20k for used? Sound about right? thanks!

Yes, there are a few differences between the years, 3 major ones being:
-2000-2001 with the thin hands. Dial will turn yellow with age. Probably the most "valuable" of the white dial 520's due to their rarity since it was only produced for a year.
-2009-2010 clasp changed from the smaller buckle to the one that is still used today.
-2015-16 the lume went from green to blue, the same found on the current daytonas. Also the box and warranty card as well as the hang tags changed to the current design. Will cost more than the previous years due to the change in lume and packaging.

If I were you I would get 2010+ (updated clasp is worth it) that is in the best condition, unpolished if possible, complete set with box, papers, and hang tags that you can find. Bonus points for 15-16 but the watch looks exactly same unless you're using the lume. As long as it's in great shape complete with b&p you should be good. $20k seems to be the new price for a complete mint set. You can still find them for around ~$18k if you are willing to buy privately. Good luck with the hunt!

They are both nice.

My personal opinion:
One is dressy and sporty.
And the other one is just sporty.

Seeing “scrambled serial number” what year did that start (ie how to find a 15-16)..

Edit: according to this:
https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-serial-numbers

anything with scrambled serial is “safe” as it is 2011-2016 for 11520...

I love my 520 white dial but would love to own the 500 white dial (or black dial) as well. It's really crazy how such a small change as a bezel and subdials can totally change the look of a watch from dressy to sporty.

You really can't go wrong with a SS Daytona though in any color. All 3 generations are unique and have their charm. I'm just glad to be able to own at least 1!

+1.
2000-2002 (serial P, K) thin hands with cream dials and greyer subdials are most valuable, similar to the Patrizzi dials of W serial 16520. Very collectible but prices are already high since a few years ago.

My 116500 gets the most wrist time. I love the contrast. Both are great though.

What do you think?
If you're strictly speaking about the White Dial version, no way......its an extremely 'boring" dial. One should look at the Zenith White Dial 16520 for something that can rival the current Ceramic model. The black outlined sub-dials on the Zenith make for a beautiful contrast vs the silver outlined sub-dials on the 116520 which does nothing to enhance the look of the watch.

If we take the Black Dial version into consideration, then "Yes", a much more appealing dial and watch than the current 116500 Black Dial Ceramic.....

Daytona 116520 vs Daytona 116500 ceramic

For me 16520 and 116500 are my favourites. Could never really love the 116520. Always thought it was a bit too vanilla and non descript. Sorry, 116520 lovers, no disrespect meant.

+1. Try to get the APH model if you can. Some collectors believe it is rare, which I don't think it is. I have seen many APH models. In the end it is a marketing tool for collectors.

I strongly prefer the 116520. Also, not a fan of the black ceramic bezel.
