Exciting story. Looking forward to hearing what RSC Texas has to say. First of all, I hope it checks out and isn't stolen.

Secondly, If this is a replica (which I doubt), then it's really scary how good these criminals have gotten at copying. With the increase in demand and prices of Rolex over the past few years, it's no surprise that this scummy industry has grown as well. If they really have gotten so "good" that even real enthusiasts can't tell the difference from high-resolution pictures of the movement and dial print etc., it will have huge implications for the used market and industry as a whole.

I assume the official Rolex Service Centers have their own in-house methods of authenticating, and can still guarantee with 100% certainty the legitimacy of the watch they service? Because if it ever gets to the point where Rolex themselves can't tell the difference, and end up servicing a fake watch and replace fake parts with authentic ones, they really will have a huge problem on their hands. They must be doing a lot of work internally to avoid this ever happening, right?

Also, I think it's important that moderators allow a discussion between honest enthusiasts to occur on this topic. Context of the discussion matters. It's very important for us to exchange valuable information on this relevant and important topic in order to be informed on how far this fakecrap have gotten, and what to look out for.

Great story!! Fingers crossed for the OP!! OP should not feel guilty about the great find if its legit. His mom did not force them to sell the watch for $700. She offered - they accepted. End of story!!!!!!!!

Yes they have such resources to find aftermarket items. Something as simple as the random serial number is invaluable. The reason is they have the build sheets. Also, even public forums have posted random and regular s/n’s that fakers use and reuse.

I understand your desire to learn more about that topic, but I support TRF’s rules against general discussion of fakes.

There is a TRF section set aside (and now expanded) for review of questionable watches. Within that context the discussion is allowed more latitude than a freewheeling exchange of info on fakes.

BTW, there are forums dedicated to that dark side of the industry and anyone can learn all they want by reading them.

Looks real to me and I don’t find it hard to believe that some times in life some people get extremely good breaks and others get extremely bad breaks.

That’s life and it doesn’t care either way, it goes on.

OP, thanks for taking us on this wonderful adventure and I can’t wait for the conclusion. Good luck and I hope it is a happy ending.

I don’t even know if they really knew anything about it. They initially said they didn’t know anything about it and when I pressed my mom to press them on its legitimacy they said it’s fake. Which still, who knows. I’m pretty confident it’s legit at this point, but until I send it out it’s not 100%.

The OP knows watches. I believe fake isn’t on the table. He did his homework. Once it clears Rolex theft screening and they service the GMT they are home free.

A key point I missed was it was a thrift shop, not a collectible shop. So why or how did it end up at a thrift shop is the OP’s issue.

I believe the watch is real as well as the story that it was in a box that was donated. All the rest of the theory’s on here are close to impossible.
Op-good luck!

So I emailed USPS yesterday and they got back to me today. The watch was delivered the day it was out for delivery. As a few of you guys have stated, they must've just missed the scan and the scans are secondary to the signatures for registered mail.

Now this is my first time dealing with RSC since I've sent my other stuff to Phillip Ridley. Should I expect them to contact me before service or they just go ahead with servicing if everything is good?

Just get a quote. If there’s a problem with the watch they will tell you. Decide later.

If everything is good, meaning authentic and not on the stolen report, RUSA will email you a detailed description of the work they suggest. The description will be in a PDF with a lot of data. An example of the important part is shown below (excerpted from a job they did for me a year ago)...

Been following this since the beginning and hopefully you can post up some RSC feedback in the next day or two. They should reach out to you before any service work commences.

Thanks guys. This is what I was most curious about. I'm guessing they get a pretty large amount of incoming packages so in processing them all might take a little. Hopefully I hear something by the end of the week.
