New toy for the wet shavers out there

I picked up a new razor from Charcoal Goods.
I was on the waiting list for nearly a year!
Great shave. It’s the Level 1 plate with a Feather blade. I love a mild razor with a wicked blade.
Solid brass with a hand applied antique finish, magnum oversized handle.
Made in the USA as well. Mine is number 484.



Today’s shave included
Captains Choice bowl
Dr. Jon’s Number 13 soap
Semogue Excelsior 1305 Boar shaving brush
Charcoal Goods Razor
Feather Blade (2/3)
The Holy Black Lavender Creeper Aftershave splash
And Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Moisturizer.
Awesome shave to start the weekend!

Just the other day i was going to start a thread asking "what else (besides watches) do yall geek out on?" My best shave is a kiehls cleanser, proraso sandalwood, escali badger, merkur futur with feather blades & Royall Vetiver. I could probably use an upgrade on all of those. Any recs on a brush? I really like all the proraso & merkur products.

It’s hand made by a one guy operation in the US, probably only working nights and weekends.
It’s not a mass market appeal kind of product, more like usable art.
There’s a couple other companies doing similar things in the US. They are all difficult to get unless you want to pay ridiculous mark up for a second hand product. Sounds kind of like another product we’re all familiar with...

Here’s the one that got me started...

My father’s 1952 Gillette Blue Tip.
He shaved with it during his military service, on his wedding day, and for decades more.
It’s in amazing shape considering how many shaves it’s given.

Nothing fancy, but I have at least a half dozen or so under the bathroom sink. I probably won’t wear out 1 in my lifetime, but if I do, I have spares.

When not using a straight razor, my Merkur long handle Progress adjustable can't be beat.

I will say the OP has a nice piece of art there!

Wow - had read about them on a couple of the forums. The mild DE with a surgical Feather blade is indeed a superb shave.

If I'm going DE I'm more for an open comb, very aggressive razor, with a classic Gillette Platinum Blue, known as the "Swede".

I'll be waiting to see if Obie on another forum shows up with one of these....congratulations.

I’ve heard of stainless steel waitlists but bronze is new!

I use Merkur barber pole and Derby blades. Feather nearly shaved off my skin.

I use an electric, and have for years. I can sort of see the appeal of a nice wet shave, but how long does something like this take start to finish between the brushes and creams etc?

I enjoy wet shaving too, but straights only. I used this old Spanish razor in Swedish scales earlier.

About 10 minutes if you’re taking your time and enjoying a nice shave.
A couple minutes to make a nice lather, a couple of clean up, and a few more for a 2-3 pass shave.
I usually soak the brush for a few minutes while I take a shower or brush my teeth, etc.
It’s not that long. You can probably cut a couple off moving on a rigid as fast as possible routine.

Brushes are tough to recommend, everyone wants something different.
I started with an art of shaving badger, which was fine, though overpriced, but I wanted to feel what I was getting. My favorite is a badger I had made with a 6,000 year old bog wood handle. I have no idea who made the knot. I told him I wanted the densest badger he could find. The boar above is great and cheap. Not as smooth as a badger, but I like a good backbone.
My next one will be a custom acrylic handle from Wolf Whiskers. I’m 30 something on the wait list there, so another month or so. That one will be a synthetic almost certainly.

About $250. The bronze version is a bit more, but I wasn’t sure how well that would age with the minimum upkeep I wanted to invest.
He’s changed his business model and did away with the wait list.
Apparently now he’s going to make a load of parts and then put them on the site in his shop. You’ll have to get his newsletter to find out when he’s going to put the parts on sale. At least that’s what I recall he said he was planning to do. I guess people would rather do that than wait and wait on a list.
He’s got 3 different plates for people that like a more aggressive shave.

I have the whole razor set from Brian of Charcoal Goods and I was lucky to get to talk to him via email before his popularity exploded. He makes a great product and is a good guy on top of it all. I really enjoy using his razors

Dope razor. I use a Futur and a cheap boar brush. I love that you can fine tune the Futur to the kind of shave you want.

Thats a beautiful razor. I may have to look into his stuff.

My favorite combo is a Timeless(another USA made small company)open comb with a KAI blade. Find em wicked sharp like a feather but a bit smoother/forgiving especially on the first shave.

I seem to always fall back to a cheap synthetic brush from maggard.
