President Calendar Problems

I bought a used 1979 President about 2 weeks ago. It keeps perfect time. I think the day and date are supposed to change instantly at about 2 minutes after midnight--at least mine does sometimes. Other times it takes quite a while for the day and date to change. They eventually do sometime between midnight and 6 AM. The date sometimes 'slips' back a day when I use my left hand, like clapping at a ball game. I can get it to go back to the correct date by waving my wrist a few times. Has anyone had this problem and what did it take to fix it. I'm hoping it's just something loose in the calendar mechanism.
Thanks, George

Time for a service. Always good to have a recent service anyway

George - Welcome to TRF.
Sorry you're going to have to get a costly service right after purchasing it.
If the seller has a return policy, maybe do that for a refund and begin looking again...

like everyone else - it needs a good service. At least after its serviced you will have the feeling of a brand new, perfectly functioning watch!

Well its quite a old watch and if no service history it would be advisable to have in serviced.Rolex uses a cam system on the date day changes and sometimes they can get a bit dry so it could take and extra minute or so for the jewel to slide off the cam .But by your description it sounds like general wear in the cam system so either need lubrication or if worn replacing.

I had issues with my 18078 with the day and date wheel. It took two visits to RCS to get it right. I made it harder on them to fix because they just wanted to put new in. But I wanted to have my open 6 and 9s. Don't what they did but after 2 years no problems
