Pretty amazing, but kind of pricey and first gen could be glitchy.

I am a Galaxy Note man and hate the thought of losing the S-Pen.
I am currently rocking the Note 9 which is an amazing phone but waiting to see what the Note 10 is like and will decide then if I want to upgrade. I suspect I will.
Personally I wouldn't pay 2k for the first generation fold as it may be glitchy and over the coming releases they should very quickly improve the form factor and give a much slimmer phone.

I could see this Fold being great for a professional who only wants to carry one device. I think I will get an S10+ instead, since $1000 for a phone I might break or lose is already a lot.

I’ve tried the Samsung thing several times and just
couldn’t gel with it ... Apple is still the one .

Plus it looks bulky enough.

I like it on ingenuity and novel functionality.

The price on first blush has people commenting. But if they bought an iPhoneXsMax, and a LTE iPad mini, they’d be right at $2000 - oh and having to pay for 2 dataplans.

So it isn’t a price issue once educated consumers do the comparo’s- it’s the Android app ecosystem that may doom it. Some apps can’t function in a dual format motif from a single instance. So it could end up as a razor handle with no blades.

It will take a good deal of coding. That’s why Samsung released its API load early during a developer conference.

17mm is thick - almost 3/4” - that will be a dealbreaker for many. Also, the screen can’t fold flat like Huawei Note - it’s for a gap the avoid creasing/shorting the screen.

Huawei also has a foldable phone now. A little industrial espionage perhaps on the other side of the planet.

i saw that this morning. really stupid timing with all the accusations. Its clearly similar. Even if they didn't copy it, the timing couldn't be worse, image wise

The EU and US are already trying to keep their stuff out of their markets... trade negotiations in progress with the US and China with industrial espionage being a big sticking point. i dont get it. Probably be a bigger deal if it was Apple and not a Korean company though.

Good point.

One device that can expand or contract depending on your needs.

its the reason i dont have a tablet though. I have a phone and a laptop. A tablet cannot replace my computer and if i am going anywhere where my phone isn't going to cut it, my computer goes. Ill never get rid of my laptop. I guess its for people who dont really need a computer... tablets in general. Im not in the demographic.

Interesting.

I have an iPhone (a small one 6SE) which I use mostly as a phone and camera because I don't do much web stuff when out and about.

An iPad which I use a ton. Surfing while watching TV, traveling, watching movies on planes, reading books, etc.

Home computer for other stuff especially that involves typing, retouching pictures, all office stuff.

I love it.

However that is only because it's bleeding edge tech and priced accordingly. I won't be getting it.

iPhones got wireless charging about 5 years after Android phones had it. same with OLED screens and lots of other features that Android has had for years. Apple is just better at convincing a non tech savvy public that they are leaders in innovation.

Here's hoping they ditch that stupid lightening port and go USB C this year.

what's stupid is i have a MacBook pro with the usb-c ports. So i buy a brand new iPhone and its not USB-C. its lightning to USB. I agree USB C to USB C would be better. But then you can just use your MacBook pro charging cable for both purposes and that would be too simple

Lightening was great when it first came out. Everyone else was on micro USB and that is not a good connection.

USB C is better than lightening in every possible way, but Apple isn't exactly known to be consumer friendly. They just want you to keep buying those stupid adapters instead of adopting the universal standard that everyone else is moving towards and using.

At least the ipad pro has USB C. I didn't think they would do it.

Cool idea. If they get thinner and cheaper I may consider something like this. We have tablets all over the house and I never use them as I still need my phone close by. Just grab the phone. Wife uses the tablets more often. When traveling I still need a laptop for work. I have my IT guys looking at some options for using a VPN on a tablet, if that works I will be even more interested in the phone/tablet combo.

True. I wish I could make do with an iPad Pro, but it's impossible for me. I need my Macbook Pro.

Yep, a coworker bought one and everybody thought it was the coolest thing ever. The computer monitor not so much...

I'm very pleased to see development going in this direction because I find the current offerings being too small to be useful for all the internet functions of which they are capable. Unfolded, the screen size is capable of displaying enough data to be useful and at a magnification that I can actually read.
It would be my perfect 'phone if they can keep the overall shape but make it <5mm thick unfolded (2.5mm folded out), <5 oz in weight, and <A$500.(5 years?)
I'm one of the small remaining population of people who are not phone obsessed and are only interested in whether one serves my needs. I will never see a phone/device as a status symbol.

Waiting for second gen, plus with no 5G built-in what's the point? IMHO we're at a transition phase so perhaps wait for SECOND GEN 5G phones would be a smart move. Keep what you have now for another 18 months and see where the industry is at that time is my advice.
